Sports Mode not working

My 2005 Disco 3 TDV6 Auto has progressively decided not to to let me engage sports mode. It works now only about 50% of the time. I like to use manual shift from time to time when descending long hills.

I spoke to a LR dealer who intimated that the switch was buried deep in the auto trans and would therefore be expensive to fix.

Has anyone had the same problem and how expensive was the fix?

I think there have been some issues with the gear selector. Search DISCO3.CO.UK - Dedicated to Discovery 3 and LR3 Owners and Enthusiasts (http://www.disco3.co.uk). I think it is just external linkages.
