View Full Version : TD5 rattle/power loss

On the way to work this morning, my 01 D2 TD5 started making a distinct rattle under the bonnet, accompanied by a noticeable power loss. Pulled over and had a look, the engine looks to be vibrating more than usual, there's a knocking/rattling sound that is particularly noticeable when I turn the engine off. No warning lights on the dash. Unfortunately my mechanical knowledge is pretty poor, so my guess that I am running on 4 cylinders is up for review. Any ideas? And if it is the case, any ideas what may be causing it? In for repairs at the local dealer, fingers crossed.

Not a good day. The diagnosis so far is a loose crankshaft, seemingly caused by a bearing giving out. Won't know the full damage till Monday, but engine change was mentioned as a possibility. Does this sound right? And for a bearing to go on an engine with only 30k-ish on it doesn't sound normal, anyone else had this happen? I'll be a tad frustrated if my engine has called it quits this quickly

Would appreciate the opinions of those with more experience.

Chris.

I'm just wondering how the hell do you get a Disco of '01 vintage with only 30K's on it.:eek::eek:

Mechanic forgot to replace the sump plug after a service, replaced the engine with a brand new one.

I would. He won't be making that mistake again.

Has anyone run a nanocom or test book to check the injectors ?

Sounds your Disco is good for its 3rd engine now... No, the bearing shouldn't fail (should be not too difficult to replace IMHO, if no other components are damaged the engine can be repaired). Maybe the mechanic who fitted the engine this time forgot to fill in oil before starting it?!? Good luck!

G'day Stig. Mechanic was from a very reputable workshop, and just had a brain fart on the day - replaced with no hassle and full care. Serviced there a few times since, and no probs.

Zute - You're right, to my knowledge they didn't make the same mistake again, and I've not heard a bad word about the workshop since, so won't name them here, they've definitely done the righty by this car in the past! Not sure if the shop ran a Nanocom today, but they could lift the crankshaft and it had over an inch of movement- they reckon the play should be in the region of a few thousandths of an inch, not inches. Doesn't sound good.

Had a chat to one of the blokes at work, he reckons a TDV6 from a D3 fits straight in, that seems a tall leap to me. I'm hoping that it doesn't come down to an engine replacement, but am planning in case it does. Any one come across this before? Can you replace a TD5 with a TDV6? I had a search on here and could find any threads to say either way....

No you can't.

Bell Auto Services in the UK are converting a Defender to TDV6 at the moment, but currently there is no kit available.

IMHO , There is nuthing wrong with a TD5 engine ?? why the swap to a TDV6 ???

If the mechanics just replaced the engine that should go for another 200-300 ,000 kms before you need to touch anything ??

Was it a NEW engine or a NEW TO THE CAR engine????.You may have a motor from a write-off installed!!!

It was definitely a new engine Andy, not from another vehicle. As I understand it, it was one of the last new ones in Australia, not sure of the accuracy of that, but I'm sure that was a new engine.

If it was a brand new motor EX Land Rover I would be looking into a warranty claim from Landrover themselves, perhaps with the help of your mechanic.30000ks is NOTHING from a new motor.
It may be worth contacting Scouse via PM and see if he can track the engine number for you,it would verify its history.

Is it auto? Not a blown flex plate?

Well, the cause of the rattle has been uncovered. The crankshaft has broken between the No 1 main bearing journal and the No 1 big end bearing. If I can get the photos to attach I'll try to point out exactly where it is, but the reason given to me was that there is a crack in the crankshaft that has separated a small piece of it from the main part. Being that I have neither a mechanic's nor a metallurgist's clue, I have no idea how that happens, or how it could happen, but I'm sure that it shouldn't happen.

The quote given for repair was something along the lines of "we stopped counting when we realised that it would be cheaper to replace the engine".

More learning for me: Has anyone heard of this happening before? Given that I drove for all of about 300m after the rattle started, is it really better to replace the engine than to tear it down and replace the crankshaft?

Apologies for all the questions, but I'm pretty far out of my depth here, and appreciate the chance to ask more experienced and learned opinions before I commit thousands of dollars to this.

Cheers, Chris.

Hi Crackdougall

I had a TD5 engine in my defender replaced by Land Rover under warranty. The new motor had no engine number. I had to take it to the RTA and they had to release a new number to be stamped on the block. The RTA would only release the number after the motor was installed.
The old motor was suffering from lost of power and had trouble going up hills. I was told that it had low compression, caused by cracks in the cylinder block. Land Rover looked after me while my03 defender was off the road, they gave me a D3 to drive.

Just wanted to give a quick plug for Ward at Graeme Cooper in Sydney - I rang him for advice, and he's taken the time to chase down an engine for me. I'm in North Qld so not like I can drop the car into him to get the work done, he's just volunteered to help without being asked. Sorry mods if this is out of line, but well deserved recognition I reckon.
