View Full Version : New EGR in the Puma, what a difference!

I had the engine warning light come on the other week caused by 2 fault codes pointing at the EGR valve. Anyway, LR changed the EGR valve yesterday, and I must say,
holy https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/11/447.jpg what a difference!! I hadn't realised how much performance I'd lost, no more hesitation, no more surging, and I can take off from the lights in 2nd again easily.
Cheers,

Hey Tim,

I just read your thread, my interest pick up when you talked about taking off from the lights in 2nd.

There is no way my Puma SVX will take off in second gear, even pointing down hill it struggles.

Does a SVX have different gearing to standard Puma's ?

I haven’t had my first service (10,000k's) yet, but it is due in about 2000k's. maybe I have some sort of power problem, although it seems to drive great. The dealer might be able to sort it out.

Cheers

Don't worry you need to give it a bit to take off in 2nd. I prefer using 1st as I think it places les strain on things.
SVX is just a black 2008 Puma with some fancy stickers and an ugly (IMO) front grill. So gearing is the same.

Hi Drover, I find if its flat, or especially down hill, I can take off in 2nd without too much trouble or clutch slipping, (my 110 is also nearly always empty). If you are on any kind of up hill slope forget about using 2nd.
I had a look at the clutch when they changed it at about 40,000kms, (because the anti rattle springs had come loose), and it looked like new, so I hadn't been giving it a real hard time. I found my 110's engine "loosened up" quite a bit around the 15,000km mark.
Cheers,
Tim

You may be right. But you forgot those amazing seats.
Those of us with the SVX's may agree with you on most points cosmetically. But we probably enjoy some of the extra features on our overpriced Defenders.

yeah I got an over priced defender with no extras......:D
I like pretty much everything on an SVX except that grill...and I dont even mind the gril when it is colour coded.

Agree, someone on here with one of the first SVX's about a year ago posted photo's of theirs with the front end colour coded black to match the rest. Looked fantastic I thought and a big improvement.

Guys, just doing some research and came across this...
My Puma only has about 600km on it now - just got back from first trip ;) - was great overall except for 2 issues - the gear change rattle I mentioned in another thread, and also something I noticed with what seems like 'hesitation'.
Seems to be between 1800-2200 rpm, and not consistent, but tends to be more noticeable under light acceleration.
Anyone else had this, and if resolved - what was the issue? Thanks Gav

Wish I could remember, but that was a long time ago. It did look good. Was on this forum, perhaps someone else might remember.
I've grown used to the silver front. Don't really notice how poxy it looks now.

I don't have the gear box rattle you mention but I certainly have the "hesitation" you mention. For me it's most noticable in 2nd although it is present in other gears. It happens often and when at its worst the car loses momentom until it slowly claws its way back. I've mentioned it several times to the dealer. When they looked at it the 1st and 2nd time they said "no issue detected", 3rd time "slight turbo lag but normal operation, 4th time they didn't comment. After that I took a demo car they had for a test drive to make sure it wasn't my imagination. The demo drove significantly better without any of the hesitation.
In answer to your question I'm no help to you but I'll be interested if someone else is. Good luck.

I thought it was on the Defender2 site in the UK as I remember snow. May be wrong but he did load of mods to it.

I recently had my first service in a 2009 defender. The service guys told me there was an update for the engine management (something to do with the fuel economy/power I think!). I don't know if it's my imagination but it seems to be thirstier (hard to be sure because I tow a lot too). Maybe this will fix your problems

The only update I know of was to fix the engine management systems going into safe mode due to a rail pressure problem when cold. Those with more diesel knowhow can explain better. Dealer carried out this update to mine and all is well. I to find this engine thirsty when towing compared to a TD5 or 300TDI with the same load. Gear ratios do not seem to improve comsumtion. I think the 2.4 has trouble towing at 100km per hour and maintaining good fuel economy, towing a 14 foot boat and loaded I have a hard time getting 500kms per tank.
