I'm kinda hoping right now, you've bought it for the kids?:D

We have heaps, boxes full, been around for generations!

Yep - 2nd hand on ebay is the place to find it - if you don't mind the fact that it has been used before. Especially if your kid likes to do their own thing rather than stick to the instructions. (My boys are going through a mechwarrior phase and we currently have lego mechs all through the house!)

You can get new stuff too - everything from kits, to particular shapes or items (eg wheels) in bulk.

Postage can be a killer though, so don't forget to add that on when you do your price comparisons.

ETA: Don't fall for the cheaper options like mega blocks. I did this one year for Christmas and they are crap. The blocks will not stick or stay together, making it impossible to build things like castles etc. They are still sitting in their box in the toy cupboard.

reminds me of one tagalong we did Minie me is looking at the landies and saying Truck truck truck as he pointed each one out then a toyota prado car he says.

but thanks for that i didn't think of ebay.

we dont have any family in NZ left so that not an option

Kmart has reasonably regular sales on Lego that improve the price. Or here -
Online Shopping @ Shopping Square.COM.AU Online Bargain & Discount Shopping Square (http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/search.php?q=lego&x=0&y=0) sometimes has decent prices.

Also worthwhile to check out -
BrickNet LEGO Shop - Australian LEGO Specialists since 2002 (http://www.bricknet.com.au/)

LUGNET - The international fan-created LEGO users Group Network (http://www.lugnet.com/)

But I'm not keen on lego or anything.

Kids aren't really old enough for me to be addicted to Lego.

Yet.

I keep buying the four year olds kits for nine year olds. They're doing pretty well so far.

HA HA yes i tend to do the same, box says 6 years old but minime is only 3, waste of bloody money etc etc, but then he just picks it up and sorts out what he wants to do with it and im all happy.
his birthday i got him a new bike, looks cool, maybe i should have waited until he could ride the first bike.

Yes, will have to put my hand up,

another lego tragic!

the boy and I spend hours building stuff, knocking it down, building it again.....

I check out big dub and Mkart for specials when ever we are in town, got some pretty cheap stuff on the net too, sometimes out of the US good deals can be had. A lot of the US lego is not available in Australia all though as soon as something goes out of production, the price seems to jump pretty significantly. Given the good dollar at the moment some good deals could be done in the UK although I haven't been on UK ebay for ages to check.

The official lego webshop is really dear, more so than the shops when not on special and they sting savagely for freight.

I love Lego. I've built a complete working 4WD model from it, even got a locking centre diff. But I can't find anywhere that sells all the useful individual pieces like the diffs, cogs and so on.

I Love Lego!

The thing to remember is that it seems expensive, but if you think about the number of hours of enjoyment you (I mean, um, your kids ;) ) will get out of it, it is really very reasonable!

Meccano was actually made from painted steel. All pieces, of many shapes and sizes. came pre drilled with many 3/16 (I think) holes, along with 3/16 screws and nuts. A spanner and screwdriver were supplied and much like Lego, you could build almost anything, either with supplied plans or your imagination.

Much like Lego also, later kits had battery operated motors etc.

Norfolk Island is still the cheapest place around for Lego. Everytime my Auntie comes to visit I get her to bring some if she has room.

Haha Love lego. Our 7yo currently has all my old Lego, and a good collection of the new stuff:D He loves it.
Eldest daughters boyfriend is from Norfolk, so we'll be checking the lego out when we go!!

"Bricks" is the chinese rip off version of Lego, it's actually a perfect fit and copy of lego, and pretty good quality.

And the other really cool thing.

Design your own model (Lego software), upload it to the Lego server, design your box and they put all the bits in the box and send it to you.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Mindstorms. I have (still) the first incarnation of the robotics kits. It was great fun to play around with and scare the daylights out of the cat.

Sitting on the shelf above my iMac is the Lego X-Wing and in the other room is the Tie Fighter.

Great stuff!

Oh and has anyone seen the Mythbusters episode on the Lego ball?
