I have a 300 tdi with aircon which has me confused. Ac cooling fans are Knacked. Now the strange thing is. I live in tropical NQ and the aircon works like a trooper with no issues blows heaps of cold air. I take it that the Thermo Fan ( Viscous ) is making up for the lack of electric fans. The viscous spins freely and I have no over heating problems. The million dollar question . Should i replace the aircon fans or just leave well enough alone. Bumper to bumper traffic is not an issue in Townsville . Opinions please. Have read posts for the last 3 hours on Electric V Viscous not looking at changing anything just wondering should I replace the electrics to save the Viscous.

Well I realised that my fans were dead when my car (RRC 92) was difficult to start in Kunnunurra and the V belt slipped , even though I knew it was tight.

So I only used the aircon while moving over about 40 Kmh until I got home.
I noticed that the air was not all that cold, so after I fitted new fans, I had the local aircon guy come out.

The aircon had lost a lot of gas because the head pressure was much higher than normal although the low pressure cutout had not tripped.

If you could guarantee that you never used it while travelling slowly or stopped you could not replace them, but who can guarantee that.

10inch Calibre fans are about $70 each from Supercheap and they are easy to fit and blow up a storm. I fitted one 10 inch calibre and used an old 12 inch Davies craig I had under the house, but the calibre is by far the better.

Just checking that you've found that the two interlocks are working and that the fans are seized or something.

It's always handy to have a backup fan if the main fan flips a blade.

the thermo fans out the front arent needed for the aircon to work BUT Id be warey of operating the aircon at low engine speeds with high cab temps as you can overpressurise the condensor at the front and it can fail.

other than that so long as the main fan doesnt cark it you'll be fine.
