View Full Version : What tyres to buy? Urgent!

Hi everyone...
Just bought a D2a today and as part of the sale it is being RWC'd. When I bought it I noticed the 2 front tyres were fairly worn, I doubt they will pass RWC. I said to the seller to let me know if they don't, and I will tell her what to put on, the extra expense is mine. This will all be happening this week, so whereas I thought I had all summer to decide which touring tyre to put on it probably needs to be decided this week:eek:
I'm going around Oz next year. A lot of driving will obviously be on bitumen. and a lot of it on dirt highways and less extreme off road conditions. So, the All terrain might seem the obvious choice. Having spoken to ARB guy, he reckoned BFG muddies, or even the KM2 would be a good option. These would suit the Victorian stuff i do better, but I'm gone for a long time around oz.
What do you think? Fuel economy is important, but not getting stuck somehwre is more important. Are muddies stronger? How much noisier? Heavier on fuel? I lie the Mickey thompson a/t's with the 4 treads. I also liked the BFG at's and muddies and KM2's. Bit dubious about the Coopers having read up on here..
I'm just loving owning a LR right now...:D:)

I think A/T's will be your best bet if you are doing a heap of gravel and bitumen driving . if you went muddies they would wear out a lot quicker and make more noise on the road which could get on your nerves if you are traveling for big amounts of time ..... just my 2 cents :D:p .

Check out the Goodyear MTR also.

I'll second Fusion and say that I reckon full muddies would do your head in all the way round Oz on the kinds of roads you're talking about.
I know opinions are "divided" on Cooper tyres here, but some people (me included, although I don't have them currently) swear by them. And they do a specific ST-C all-terrain (http://www.coopertires.com.au/index.php?page=tyres&tyre_id=7) that's well suited for unsealed highways and rocky tracks.
YMMV

Im suitably impressed by the BFG at but the general grabbers have also been making a good show of themselves.

For your intended use I would recommend an ATR type tyre, rather than a mud tyre.
Get a set of four at the same time if possible.
I am having a great run out of some Pirelli Scorpion ATRs in 245/70 16 size (LT construction) at the moment. They are fitted to a RRC that is doing about 1000km of highway driving per month. They are 11 months old and show no apreciable wear. They also do some dirt road, rocky track and beach work.
I would also recommend BFG All Terrains, I have had a good run out of them in the past. In fact they are what I was going to buy when I got the Pirellis, but I couldn't source any at the time.

Hi Beanie,
What a question, and everyone will have an opinion or two. From my own experience, it is easy to get carried away with the intended use, as being more rugged that it ever will be.
I run Goodrich AT's, and if I am being honest for the use I put them through, I should have highway terrains. The Goodrich At's are however easy to live with, and even when partly worn, are relatively quiet. My experience with muddies is limited, but without fail, all types used with the chunkier tread blocks were more noisy, particularly so when partially worn.
Personally I wouldn't go near any of the minor brands like Mickey Thompsons or even Coopers. ( yes they are a minor brand back in the States ) So standby for the flood of opinion, as everyone will have one.

Have a look at this A/T tyre review from 4WD Action.
Australian 4WD Monthly dedicated to 4WD, 4x4, SUV, Truck, 4 wheel drive and off road community, loaded with tips, tests, reviews, travel, gallery and forum (http://www.4wdmonthly.com.au/tips_tyres.php)
Heaps of info there to get an opinion of what could work best for you. Judging from the review the Pirelli's get the best rating ... and seem to be good value as well. Good luck.
Cheers

Is there any big difference between Scorpion A/T and ATR? Or is ATR replacement to A/T? Thanks

I would also go Coopers ATR's but make sure they are the LT type.
Keep correct tyre pressures for any given road and you will have a ball.
I also suggest you find say 2 spares, even if not new.
If you have 18inch wheels, many places in the outback only stock standards (15-16).
My coopers have been brilliant, with care these will do 100k km's.
My friends also have them and Yes the ST's did chip but he is a Patrol driver and too lazy to deflate tyres.
Hope it helps.

Thanks to everyone who's replied, all good advice. I'm leaning towards A/T's, they seem to be longer lasting when used a lot on bitumen/gravel, and less noisy. I'll check out all the tyres mentioned... my father has a set of BFG a/t's on his ute and they've been great- not noisy at all either. Pirelli's look very interesting. Cheers

I have recommended the MTR's which I think are a perfect touring tyre and are what I usually run when touring.
For road use I also use the Pirelli ATR and that is an excellent tyre also.
