Hi everyone, got a loud whine like a hairdryer sound coming from the 300tdi engine bay, it gets louder with the revs even when stationary. Any ideas??

Crook bearing in an idler or belt driven accessory?

...or the water pump bearing on its last legs.

See if you can hear the noise coming from any one bearing, maybe remove one belt at a time and see if you can track it down that way.

If you remove the serpentine belt, check the play in the water pump bearing.

Might even be the belt itself! Drip a bit of water onto each belt in turn and see if the noise changes or goes away.

grab a screw driver, a long one, or a length of house and place one end on the alternator and another against your ear. If it sounds rough you have dodgy bearings. my alternator did the same thing. You can actually hear it in the feature video on my youtube site. I have a disco and a petrol at that but the bearings all sound the same when they are ready to seize. If it is the alty take it to an auto elec, they will replace the bearings for about 100 bucks. Even with stuffed bearings the alternator will charge fine. Anyway, good luck.

Check all your intercooler hoses are tight, mine made a terrible noise when one came a bit loose.

Thanks guys, just did a 400km cruise down to queensciff and the noise had gone quiet, think it might be the water pump bearing
