Hi guys, I have read a bunch of threads this evening about TD5 loss of power and have come to the conclusion my MAF sensor may have stopped working and the vehicle has gone into go slow mode.
Vehicle - Nov 2000 D2 TD5 approx 235,000 Km
Symptom - driving today up a slight incline all of sudden loss of power, I heard some kind of click or slight knock sound, nothing loud, wasn’t sure if it came from transmission or engine bay, heart started racing and of course think the worst. Pulled over straight away, checked under hood everything looked and sounded ok while idle and when driving home sounded fine, no warning lights came on in the dash. Continued home very sluggish, like no turbo working, I had to back down the gears to get up some of the hills, but got home no worries. Auto gear changes were working fine.
Straight into the garage and noticed oil dripping onto driveway, checked and banjo bolt on oil feeder to turbo was leaking quite bad, must have just happened as have had no leaks there previously. Is it coincidence ! Anyway, pulled out bolt and checked, cleaned and tightened, no more leak. Still no power though !! Checked all the intercooler hoses, they look a bit tired and could probably do with replacement (silicon I believe is best), noticed some oil residue in the in and out hoses, nothing unusual from what I have read. Checked air filter and air filter box for blockage or debris, all ok, cleaned sensor electric connectors with CRC and dried off with air compressor – all shiny now.
I just get real scared cause this baby is starting to cost a bit and the wife gives me a hard time - easy for her she drives a new car….I am sure the guys at Les Richmond love me, every time I call it costs me $500 !!
Anyway, does my conclusion sound reasonable, MAF sensor?? I assume test book would confirm. So, assuming this is the problem is it still safe to drive to mechanic, approx 25 Km away or is a tow a better option (you gotta love RACV).
Thanks guys.
Cheers
Richard
