Does anyone other than safari make snorkels for d2's. Have checked a few sites but as yet havn't seen much. I am trying to do a price and style search, with fitting instructions included--new or secondhand? Anyone else been through this???

Airtec.

I do prefer the Safari who also manufacture the LandRover supplied ones.

Airtec does them. Safari used to manufacture them for LR and still make them. My D2's was badged both LR and Safari. Mantec (http://www.mantec.co.uk/productdetail.cfm'theProductID=60F69F31-15C5-F4C0-99939974C2708DB3) does one for the D2.

I've not heard good reports about Airflow snorkels and I have a feeling they don't make a D2 one anyway.

Airtec and Safari both do them in Australia. There are more options from the UK if you search on the web.

I went for the safari, it only cost me a little bit more and in my opinion looks better, looks stronger and you can mount different heads on it for travel in dusty areas etc.

Thanks for not looking at the stuffup I made of mine by not following the template.

Another thread (somewhere on the forum) gives plenty of support to the Safari as the better option of the three.

Hi Greg
I've been through this and decided on the safari. They seem to be the dearest but if your lucky enough to score a second hand one I can post you my template if it helps.

Seal EVERY joint with copius amounts of RTV sealant when assembling,

Also remove air box and seal up the stupid dump valve (I popped in a suitable plastic cap and RTV'd it in as well) and the other small hole in the bottom of the box, and if your really fussy (like me) add an extra foam seal to the lid so it sits down "hard" on the bottom when clipped together.

And if the safari still uses the flexi section between the airbox on the factory wing intake, then that is BREATHABLE, so if you have some (or get some), cover it in a self amalgamating silicone tape to make that water proof as well.

Is there still somewhere for the rain etc. to get out?

Rain does not go down the snorkel on a safari, its has "drains" built into the head........

A snorkel needs to be sealed "completely" from top to bottom, or its just not worth bothering with one, when your engine is under water it will find the smallest place to draw in air, and if theres holes the water will come to.

Once the snorkel is installed you should be able to stall the engine by covering the head, if it doesn't stall you have a leak somewhere and its a good idea to go find it before you go wading (you will hear it sucking where the leak is). "if" your just fitting the snorkel for "dust" issues, then probably not so much of a worry, but the choice is yours.

I am really only fitting the snorkel due to the dust issues I consider inherent in the D2. I have used vaseline, lanotec grease and silicone spray to seal up the air box - this is all irrelevant when the air intake is from the area of the wheel arch , where the dust is generated. The last time I headed out bush[Obriens Ck] which is west of Mt Surprise FNQ and then on into the gem fields the only way I really kept the dust out was by continually checking the filter and cleaning it out each morning before heading out on the dry bush tracks. The idea of driving my d2 through water that necessitates an airtake as high as the snorkel, or a bow wave over the bonnet does not interrest me in the least, Iv'e got a boat for that
Thanks all for your imput though it does really make for informed and well thoughtout decisions
