G'Day all

What's the general consensus on Late model auto's V manuals for 4Wd's.I have done the High Country (NSW & Vic) fire trails with a Jeep auto and I have to say that I was impressed with the performance .Being an old codger I have always had manuals..but am looking at getting a newie soon and thinking about Auto this time.Does the Puma come with an auto?
Any advice appreciated.

What? You can still get manuals? I thought they went the same way as cross ply tyres.;)

With the purchase of the D3 I was kind of forced to go with an auto if I didnt want the base model. After always having manuals I am surprised how good it is off road and can't think of a situation where I'd rather have a manual.

the only reason my county isn't an auto is the fact that it would be an impractical major exercise to link one up to the 4BD1

my d1 is a 300tdi auto and there's nothing I've wanted to do on- or off-road that wasn't easier (and equally economical) with the HP22 auto........

I have an auto V8 D2 and love it.

You can hold gear like a manual in low range or put it in D and let it go.

Great in the sand as well, no loss of momentum if you need to change gears.

I love the auto behind by Tdi Disco. Much easier (better?) in sand and very easy to creep along slowly on the rough stuff. No need to burn the clutch when reversing my caravan up hills either!

In my book auto is king!

Wish mine was still an auto, I agree it makes for a fantastic off road vehicle, except for downhill work:(

:DYes Ian, Soozoo was fantastic with the auto behind it, but didn't last:(

Still wish I could do another conversion, using a 4HP24E and a compushift, but happy enough with the LT95 now...sort of....:(

The jeep I was in hung in well on the steep declines in the Kozieosko (NSW) ( sic I think) and Alpine(Vic) national Parks and they were very steep. I thought the Landy auto box was an excellent box No Probs with it?.

Surely there would be an auto available that could cope, was it a ZF that failed?

No probs, unless you stick it behind a bone shaker of a 4bd1T and push 450+ Nm through it:o

My biggest problem apart from breaking the 3 gearbags was the gearing wasn't low enough, even in low range and the torque at idle was imense, had trouble stopping it in drive in first low at idle:)

I'm very happy with my auto Tdi disco having owned both auto and manual.

The only disappointment is the absurd step between range D and 3 once over 80kmh. I've inquired [sic] about third gear lockup, but the mob is reluctant at 250 km without a full rebuild. Especially noticeable with larger tyres.
