On monday evening I noticed that the coolant level was a bit low, about 15mm or 20mm below the 'COLD' level.
I didnt think too much of it, naturel loss and the like. I topped it up and then this morning had a look again, it had gone down to about the previous level.
I had a good look around the engine bay area but couldnt see any sign of leakage.
Should I be concernd?
Have read about the cooant sensors and the potential damage that can occur and cost of engines and so have it booked in to the dealership for a coolant change (its about due).
I could probably do it myslef but dont really have the facilityand the cost of the dealer doing it seems like good insurance to me.
any advice on checking pipes or to allay my concersn would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I got the same problem like your. If I add more to max it will go back to previous level. At the moment (my case) I just leave it as long as it is above the low level. It has been like this for 3 months now.
I had problem with the top hose radiator as it was leaking from there but now I couldnt find any leak.
It could be over presurrised (there must be leaking somewhere) but still have done pressure testing ( I know I should).
I think you should do presurise testing...Hopefully they can find where it leaks.

thats normal believe it or not....
every single td5 deefer has had the cold level stabalise about an inch below the cold mark and when running sitting on or just below the cold mark.
do what I did,
pen mark it on the tank first thing in the morning and use that as your low level mark.,

Hi, well you have done the best thing by booking it in, but ensure you get proper tests done.
You may just have some slight leekage from hoses which is evaporating before it makes its way to the ground.
Potential leaks (apart from hoses) are from a failing water pump, coolant plug on side of the head, o rings in the fuel cooler or the bottom 5 cores of the radiator.
The o rings in the cooler can be replaced.
Water pumps are aound $100 to $300 depending who supplies and what brand + fitting.
The plug is just some new sealant but about an hrs labour.
Radiator is around $350 plus fitting.
If its not found here then unfortunately you may have to think about the head gasket.

I have exactly the same prob om my D2 V8.
Mine also does the same as dearot's, fill it up and after a drive it settles back down to the previous level.
All I heard was the usual "your heads gone mate, its gonna cost ya! Hahahaha!! Kerching, kerching!!"
So had it all pressure tested and all seems good.
It must be a LR thing, though I have been informed that it's a similar issue on slightly older V8 Jaguar car engines also.
Good tip from Blknight.aus about using the marker pen....I'm gonna do that this weekend! Thanks for that one. ;)
Maybe the bottle is sitting just a tad high on the bracketry...?? (just a thought)
Cheers,

My 02 D2 V8 was going through lots of coolant as it was visibly leaking.
By the end of it I had replaced throttle body cooler, valley gasket and a few hose clamps etc. and had the whole system flushed. There was a slight weep from the passenger side head gasket, but that has sealed up too.
So far so good, no leaks noticable and coolant level has been spot on the mark for the past three weeks.
One thing the Land rover guys up here did was flush the system and get rid of that red coolant.
A few people reckon it is no good for the seals etc. not sure if this is true though.

My 01 TD5 has a very slight weep from the water pump mounting O ring, it only leaks when the engine is cold so it's hard to spot but you should see a dried trail of coolant if you look closely.

The red OAT coolant is very "thin" when compared to green coolant. If there is a slight chance of a leak it will find its way through.

Gday All,
I have been told that this happens mainly to the engines with the plastic dowels and its the head moving on gasket..Find it abit hard to believe but that came from a L/rover mechanic in Perth.
I have had a small weep on the hose that is under the turbo not the small one behind it but there is 1 that comes out under it and is sorta S shaped, ive removed that bugger 3 times and emery cleaned the fitting changed the clamps and it still weeps.
Cheers Ean

Try giving it a smidge of "Holimar3" on the "fitting" next time ..... :)

I had a slow leak which I couldn't find. Eventually found it was the drain plug at bottom of radiator which is hidden by a shield plate (may not be using right words here). Seemed to only leak when really hot. New plug -> no problems. Also changed over to green coolant at the same time and have had no problems since.

I like the idea of the texta mark on the header tank. I shall do this next week after the coolant has been replaced and setteled.
Had another look around this morning, taking the plastic shrouds off and the engien cover as well.
No sign of coolant but some oily mess aroudn the fwd rocker cover
thanks

I got the coolant changed out and a pressure test done, no leak found. I am happy with that.
havent got to do any longer trips yet.
later, when it looks liek teh coolant elvel has setteled I shall mark the header tank and monitor it from there.
Thanks

Yep, same thing happens on the Td5 (as per Dave - Blknight) and on a V8 that I know... although it probably is the heads on that... ;) that and the little pipe that comes out of the bottom of the tank :p
Also changed over to green coolant at the same time and have had no problems since.
Green? Hope it's OAT... I believe you can get green OAT coolant, but didn't think it was as common as the red/orange stuff? Might pay to check if you haven't already - just in case. :):)
Cheers
Mike
