Hi All, I realy like fishing with a rod,, any size or situation, but most of my rods have egg beaters because its (usualy) easy to change them for use by a left handed person. Anybody know of any brands of other types of gear, other than eggbeaters that are made for lefty,s?
Thanks, in advance.

Depends on your interpretation of what hand should be used to wind the reel.

I am speaking in regard to baitcaster reels - as you already have the egg-beaters sorted.

I am right-handed however all my baitcasters are left hand wind reels. This is because I cast the rod with the right hand and then I prefer NOT to switch the rod to the left hand and wind the reel with the right hand.

I must say, most right handed persons do the switch - in fact many fishing gurus reckon if you are right handed then you wind the reel right handed - and of course the same theory applies regarding left handed people.

In fact, most likely someone will come on and say the correct way is to cast with the dominant hand and then switch the rod and wind with the dominant hand.

If you are left handed (and therefore cast the rod left-handed) a right-hand reel would be perfect - and most baitcasters are made right-hand wind.

Of course if you adopt the theory of winding left handed then Shimano and Daiwa are your friends - especially Shimano. Most Shimano models are made with the left hand wind option. Calais, Calcutta, Chronarch etc.

Looks like you fish like a lefty, as i regard the action of winding as the dominant activity, needing finer motor control from the muscles in hand and wrist, (left for me), and more likely done with your dominant, favoured side, like the hand you would use for writing with.
Thanks for the brand info, it helps me to avoid pushy sales people who just want to sell whats on their shelves.:D

The way i see it is, its not the rod or which hand you cast with, or which side of your body, you cast from that determines if you are using your gear as a left or right handed person, because a rod is like a pool cue,,,universal,,, made to be used by lefty,s or right handed people. I,m yet to see a "left handed pool cue"!!,,,:D. I think you,re a lefty using your gear, right handed.,,no big deal.:) Just so long as you,re comfortable with a right hand crank,,i,m not!.
After some further research at my local fishing shop,, left handed bait caster are certainly made,, but about $ 30 to $40 more than right handed ones.:o

For what it's worth, I ordered a left hand wind Alvey for my mother in law through my local tackle supplier, if that's your reel of choice...
