Many moons ago I lives in that area (embarrassed to admit it) - im talking 20 years ago. That place suffers from having last dense areas of ethnic populations which spark this violence. Back then there was the Aussie, Triads and Lebanese gangs. These gangs would constantly be at war (machetes used back then too) and it was unsafe to walk the streets of Cabramatta, Liverpool, Fairfield, Bonnyrig etc after 8pm.

Unfortunately thats the way it is there, so to me its no surprise to hear this act of violence has occurred. In fact, its surprising we dont hear more of it.

That particular function centre i work at not normally a trouble spot but when people drink to much anything can happen. They didnt bring the weapons to the party but got them after leaving. Been doing this work in the area for over 23 years and its much much better than it used to be you can walk down john st at cabra 1am and be ok now,:) would not have stopped to use the ATM 15 years ago other areas have taken over now as bad places to be. Different ethnic group now much worse than viets were wouldnt work in their ares:(

Where we live is not all that far from Fairfield/Liverpool.

Although we don't go to either places very often (we shop at Wetherill Park, our closest centre), we have never had any problems going there.

As far as Cabramatta/Canley Vale is concerned. We regularly go to both places for some of the very best Asian food available in Sydney - IMHO:p

One particular Vietnamese restaurant in Canley Vale has been our regular haunt for almost 30 years and we've never had any issues with unsavoury characters in that area.

I will admit though, there are certain groups creeping into the Fairfield/Bossley Park area that I would not like to come across on a dark night. But there are a few other areas of Sydney I would think twice about going to late at night as well.

I guess all our main cities would have similar problem areas, especially when alcohol/hot tempers/drugs are involved and sadly at this time of the year it seems to happens more often.
