Ticking in the right front wheel

Hi everyone. Have a problem with a 'ticking' on the front right wheel on my 04 defender 110. Its not a stone but sounds similar and only starts ticking at 50kph and above. As the speed increases, so does the ticking. Sitting on 100kph it sounds like a dislexic centipede is trying to tapdance. Took it in to the local landy bloke the other day to get some springs fitted and he only believed me when I took him for a drive. Coming down the freeway ramp the ticking was reverberating off the freeway wall.

Had the cv's greased so its not them. Wheel bearings are fine and wheel nuts are tight. I was thinking it might be those bloody wheel nut caps rattling about that come with the standard defender alloys. What do people think?? Im confused. Have dealt with it by just turning the stereo up but am heading off round oz soon and think I might do myself in if I have to listen to it for 20 odd thousand kays.....

something stuck in the tread.

Ive had the tyre off blacknight and there is nothing in the tread. I checked the tyre at least 20 times for a stone but its been happening consistantly for the last 2500 kays. I think it may just be possessed by the devil :D. The noise also happens on the dirt road on the way to work. Weird.

what rims, hows the shape of the rim mounting stud holes.

They are boost five spoke alloys that come standard from landrover. The stud holes seem fine. The wheel doesn't have any obvious damage either.

Check the brake pad anti rattle springs or a stone lodged in the brake pads. Only sure way to find it is to remove rear tailshaft, jack up the noisy wheel off ground, lock centre diff and put it in gear and build up speed until noise starts. Have someone outside beside wheel to hear where it is coming from. Please note you can only do this if you have an open front diff (not locked or Detroit or Truetrac etc) and make sure you chock the other wheels and ensure nobody is in front of the vehicle when you are doing this. It could even be a uni joint on the front tailshaft. They are known to make a clicking noise sometimes when on the way out..Good luck.....Brian


ONE OTHER THING.......If you have traction control you will have to switch that off.
