I’ve been keen to buy an A-Bar for my Defender 110 CSW, but am wondering if these bars are mainly just cosmetic and mainly useful for putting extra lights on.

I’d thought that an A-bar would offer some protection in the case of a lightish front-end bump, but maybe they’re not very useful.

I wonder if a bull bar would be better, but in fact don’t need the headlight protection that these usually offer, as I already have strong “farmer’s gate” –type light protectors.

I am overseas where legal issues are not a problem.

Any thoughts on this?

It depends on how hard and what you intend to hit.;)

Main reason for bullbars in Australia is to protect the front of the car from kangaroos. Secondary to this is somewhere to mount the extra lights, radio antennae and winch. The tertiary purpose is to protect the front corners when pushing through scrub.

You have to decide for yourself how you are using the vehicle and hence how many of these factors are significant. This will decide whether you need a bullbar, A bar or just a bumper with winch mounting, or just the original bumper.
