View Full Version : Stuck at Lennox Head

I told the young fellow to start-up the IIA so he could blow up the air beds, forgetting the ignition switch some times sticks. Now the starter does not respond. I am assuming the ignition switch stuck in and the engine drove the starter for about 5 minutes. My question is "what is the likely damage that has accrued" ? Thanks for any help!

Does the starter motor spin or engage at all?
Do you have the crank handle to start the car with you?

As above. Can you crank or push start it?
Maybe the ECU has logged a fault and needs rebooting. :p

Possible starter motor has worn out bushes, poled and burnt out - but maybe just burnt commutator. Or possible burnt out solenoid (or switch if pre-67 with no solenoid). But it could simply be the ignition switch contacts are burnt.
Check if jumper lead to terminal of starter operates it, similarly check with jumper lead to switch wire (thin) on solenoid if fitted.
Even with no starter it should be easy to crank start if properly tuned. Caution! if crank starting keep thumb on same side of handle as fingers, and pull not push.

Unfortunately when the starter stays engaged it turns into a generator and really isn't designed to do this:(
I would say it has at the very least burnt the windings and/ or commutator and brushes.

No Crank, but this is a great feature, Thanks for all the advice, ECU is ECUing, the engine starts when I short out the soleniod, The ignition switch looks like it should be switching an earth to the soleniod but is not, I have a constant 12volts to the one side of the coil of the soleniod.
The soleniod looks stuffed because when i put 12 volts across it's coil terminals it does nothing.
I will check the ingnition switch tomorrow.
Can I use any soleniod or does the starter have a paticular rating?
Thanks again for the help!

you need a 200 amp unit for longevity but a 100 amp job will get you by.

The starter would not have stayed engaged - as soon as the engine started it would have disengaged, but would have continued to run, out of gear (it has an inertia drive, not a free wheel plus solenoid engagement). If it ran long enough it would be likely to wear the bushes or the brushes and commutator, not intended for continuous operation.

I'm pretty certain the ignition switch supplies 12v rather than earth to the solenoid. Any solenoid should work - I replaced mine with one from Repco a couple of years ago - terminals and mounting holes were different, so a bit of work was involved - try and get one with the terminals and mounting holes the same, it makes life easier.

Ballina Repco sells a 200amp solenoid for $32 that would have done the job but they didn't have one however Ballina wreckers had an unknown breed for $15 so the landy is now the proud owner of a new/ second hand solenoid and is off and running thanks to the help from the above contributors. A hit of CRC into ignition switch has it returning back to its ignition position.
Much thanks to all that helped!!
