View Full Version : Back from Fraser- Need new rims. Want pics of steelies

Back from Fraser Island - had a great time, after the first 20 mins on the island anyways.
Seems no-one told me about the numerous and deadly freshwater washouts that plague the beaches.
Within 15 minutes of hitting the sand, we had an accident. Smashed up one LR alloy, damaged another (both front) and bent the steering arm (the one that goes from wheel to wheel)
Looking back, a dead giveaway was the red jeep sitting on the otherside of the unobvious creekbed that we hit. He snapped an axle, transfer case was lying on the sand, and both airbags went off. Nearly threw some serious haymakers in his direction for not warning us. My fault i suppose.
For the rest of the adventure, straight was past 1/4 turn left
So: need some repacement rims. From day dot I wanted to get rid of the alloys for this exact reason.
After some STEEL rims. Keen to see some names of rims and pictures of your rides with them on her. Im told that the next tyre purchase should be 255/85s, so how wide do these rims need to be?

Sure was...

255s will go on 7 or 8 inch rims.

the alloys may well have saved you a lot of other damage by letting go as they did.
i run 255/85's on disco steel rims.

Wow, 2nd LR to break both front rims on Fraser from hitting washouts :o

I've just spoken to my father who went to Fraser yesterday for the week and he said the beach was the best that he's seen it for years. What tides were you travelling at? We have always worked on the theory of travelling 2-3 hours either side of low tide.

ur not the bloke with that 130, im the guy with the gray 110 that was towing the ship reck, :D was a asum pic:D:D

we should of had both hooked up,

i must say his not the only one, we rote off a car from a wash out as well,
all tho am glad it wasent mine and no one hert,, but nether the less,, its hard seen a nother landrover bite the dust,

yeh stig thats me.. :(
the beach was in good driving conditions, but there was a fair bit of rain the night before we got on the island. Just excess drainage I suppose.
It was a sad moment, but just more of a reason for me to justify new tyres and rims real soon. I have no useable spare at the moment.
Still, all the rain and washouts didnt stop us doing what we went there to do. I still clocked up just about 500klms in 4 days :) AND was the only truck in our group of 5 to do so...
What do black sunrays look like on a 130??
cal415
8th December 2009, 06:54 AM
Go the black sunnies, Bob jane at Kotara should be able to sort you out for a pretty decent price, while your at it grab some 255-85-16 Maxxis bighorns, Go check out Wortho's d1 at ARB, he is running that setup at the moment.

My sister did something similar when we were there, a little to fast over a wash out and damaged a rim, dobbo also had some interesting moments over the wash outs launching his car, so your not the only one....

What alloys are you running anyway?

There are no pics of the crime scene, that I know of anyways. In all the excitement of changing a tyre in the sand - there was no time for cameras :(
Here are a few I took just now. The steering arm looks worse than the photos
Hard to show but if you look closely enough, the left front side steering tie rod end housing thingy has actually shaved off the bent part of the rim - and I only drove it from the site about 25m to better sand so I could change it.
anyone after 3 good LR alloys, 1 bad one and 1 ruined one?? :p
A mate seems to think they are semi repairable... any ideas?

The average steelie is not as strong as an alloy so you would have also damaged steel rims - but at least they can sort of be bashed back into shape.
A steel rim will normally bend and is still usable but an alloy is normally history.

Yeah thats why I want steels. No point replacing them with alloys so that next time im in the sticks ill have no alternative, like this time. Good thing I didnt get a blowout or something
At least with a steel one you can at least TRY to fix - FBH, welder etc

More importantly where can one get steel sunraysias in Brissie (I need some for my 130 as well), should I get 8" or 7" ones (is there even a choice) and what offset (again, if there is a choice). Oh and an ida of $ would be handy as well.
Cheers and thanks

go 16x8 so you have better choice of tyre, but that will probobly rule out 235s, 255-85s sit pretty good on a 16x8, for offset go 0 offset or -25 if you really want some width.

Also fraz contact Lokka, he might be doing up a few HD steering links again soon..... looks like you could benefit from some ;)

Interested to know what speed you were travelling when you belted that washout?Experience has taught me over many years of sandriving that 60kph is the only safe speed as washouts come up on you quickly for they can be out of your line of vision. Better to arrive in one piece later then earlier in pieces.
cheers.

Never done an alloy offroad...
Busted several steelies, and Sunnies are as weak as water.
I doubt you could have bashed a steelie back into shape in an impact like that, more likely it would have broken apart.
Just put in an insurance claim and get a set of these as replacements...

You wont break them in any great hurry....
I had 16x10s on my Defender (Lara).... Bloody strong!

Fraz,

Depending on the quality of the alloy used in the rim you may be able to get it repaired.

I drove straight over the top of a traffic island in the commodore I used top have and had similar rim damage. It was straightened and repaired for around $100.

Let me know if your interested and I can try and find the details.

Tombie got any more details on those Staun rims ? How much are they ? Where from etc ?
Is a 16x8 too large to fit a 235/85 to ?

I wouldnt be buying the sunnies if your logic is that they will survive what you just put you landy allies through.
wolf rims, perentie rims, kabota tractor steer rims and landrover split rims definately. they'll take the pounding and normally be bodgable enough to hold the bead (even if you have to run a tube)
I'm aware of several people who have had allys repaired and theres now several specialist businesses that do this as their bread and butter. I've also seen repaired allys let go.
My Stand point on repairing of allys is this.
Providing the main bead shoulder is not damaged and the center line of the rim is still true then repairs to the bead seating face and shoulder are acceptable. Cosmetic repair of minor scratchings and divots by spray depositing is also acceptable.

For my defender I have purhased some white spoke steelis 8x16 with zero off set or $125 each made by Kings.
I hope to fit 285/75/16 to a stanard suspension defender 130 DC.
The local tyre place near work got them for me.
Does that sound correct?

I used to run 285s on a std 110 with 16x8 but they were -25 with no rubbing.

but yours may touch on the radius arms at full lock and at full flex.
cal415
11th December 2009, 02:02 PM
285s on a 0 offset may also slightly touch the upper rear spring seats if you get alot of flex... 0 is illegal so you may as well go all out and go for the -25s :)

...
My main logic here is that sunnies or similar are about 4 Million bucks cheaper than new LR alloys. I do understand that no rim is unbreakable, I just cant justify replacing them with more expensive rims for if I bust another steel one, Ill only be up for about $50-100...
Depending on the quality of the alloy used in the rim you may be able to get it repaired...
Thanks CJT - quite interested if you can dig something up for me.
Can anyone else vouch for Staun Racing Rims??

OK some questions:
Umm so what's the consensus steel or alloy ??
16x8 or 16x7 for a Defender 130 ?
What offset ? (What's legal here in Qld ? and what implications does that have?)

On a 130 you can fit standard D1 steelies 16x7 and it's almost the perfect size for a 235/85/r16
One 110's the rear spring mount sits on an angle so as to prevent using these rims without scrubbing out the inner sidewalls or getting the rims being flipped to change the offset. Not so on a 130, the rear spring mount is on a different angle, there is heaps of clearance. Disco steelies are like a 5mm centre wall and a lot stronger than sunnies.

Fraz - I reckon you should get yourself a set of Wolf rims. Genuine LR. Used by the Military. Heavy, but tough. Look sexy too!!

Not sure if you can fit fat tyres to them though. I run 7.50R16 on mine on the 130, and 235/85 on my 90.,

These are 130 rims - 6.5". They look the same as wolf rims.

I reckon i'd have to hit pretty damn hard to bend one of these. You'd need a big hammer to straighten one too.
What about picking up some Range Rover alloys from the early 1990's?
Like these?
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/12/832.jpg
They are 7" and can pick em up pretty cheap. This will keep your unsprung weight down.
As mentioned earlier you are probably better off bending/breaking the wheels than something else more important/expensive..:eek2:
EDIT: Just re-read and realise you may be in a 130 - The RR rims wouldn't be any good due to weight rating.:whistling:

Fraz - have you had a wheel alignment yet? I did the same on Frazer years ago in a 80 series land cruiser wagon and discovered that I'd bent both diff housings after getting a wheel alignment. I had sunraisia wheels on it and they bent up like bananas.
The trouble on Frazer if you don't know it is after heaps of rain the creeks gouge out vertical gullies onto the beach. I was also travelling at night with poor visability.

The wheel alignment was done within 30 mins of being back on the mainland. No problems reported, although I noticed in the last few days that the front wheels are now have a slight camber.
I cant remember seeing this before - Is this normal??

I have the Dynamica Rims in a 15x8 from Austyre and I dont like them, for a number of reasons. The bolt holes are too big, and they lose the bead easily.

I personaly wouldnt recommend the wheels, although AusTyre are great.

I think mine are a negative 25 offset although dont quote me on that.

Camber on a beam axled car which has no camber adjustment, isnt ideal no....

Compare it to another car.

Did you get the alignment report? Did they mention any camber issues at the front?

There shouldn't really be any camber at all, perhaps it is an optical illusion.... or a bent housing.
