Black at full noise is too much fuel relative to air so your suspicions about the turbo could be correct or your injectors are dirty. Or the turbo and or intercooler pipes are delaminating. I doubt the turbo is stuffed though, they last much longer than 190k.

To check the turbo and do it right you need to plumb in a boost gauge. Its a hassle but its the only way of sorting it if you want to fix the problem yourself properly, or do what I do.. its a bit rough but It will get you started. Take of the inlet hose to the turbo and you will see a small hose that runs from the turbo to the waste-gate held by some small clips. Disconnect the hose from the waste-gate end leaving the hose connected to the turbo. Now screw in a bolt to block the hose, just leave it hanging but tuck it away and reconnect the inlet pipe. You will now have full boost. If the smoke clears up you will know that the turbo is at least working and has some life in it and it might be worth getting the boost checked. Its an easy five minute job and can be put back just as quick. I hate adjusting the boost on a 300 as the wastegate is virtually inaccessible behind the exhaust. If no or little change then suspect turbo and inlet pipes or injectors.

Yeah, mine was smokey too, new silicone hoses, upgraded intercooler and pump tweak by diesel mech sorted that with an extra 15KW's. Thank you very much I said.

Also check for anything else in the air intake that could be stopping air getting in easily. Blocked filter, filter box full of leaves, plastic bag stuffed down your snorkel etc.
