Classic Rangie Rear Hatch.

We all know the rust problems these hatches have.
What are the options for replacing one? All second hand items are in terrible condition.

But I'm still looking for a price on their "kit" so I don't have to ship glass I already have around the world.
It appears to be the same one Paddocks sell, but paddocks are showing no stock or price.

MR Automotive in Queensland have been getting the former Maxidrive aluminium frame tailgates manufactured recently. They consist of a single powder coated aluminium frame with the glass held in-place by retaining strips on the inside.

I believe they are a stronger/better option than the BritPart aluminium frames which are made of 4 seperate alloy elements with mitre joints at the corners. Most of the tailgatge strength is some flimsy screws joining the rails and the rest of the strength is the glass itself.

I have the Maxidrive/MR Automotive tailgates on both of my currently registered classics.

Any idea on price? I'll have to factor in freight to NZ, the maxidrive/MRautomotive ones will no doubt cost more to freight being fewer pieces.

The tailgate on my 85 has held together well, but I'm considering buying another and they're all perforated.

I have had one of the rear alloy window frames for about 6 years. The hardest part of the process is removing the glass from the old rusty window frame

Be careful of the clearance around the glass when you fit it in the new frame and go light on the mastic.
I was on a club trip with one of our members who had one fitted by a Specialist the day before the trip . When we got up in the morning the glass had shattered.

Which brand of frame was it?

My panelbeater recommends using the sealing strip (sort of like double sided tape) with windscreen sealant (not Mastic) and importantly also a plastic membrane between the glass and the retaining strips. You could even use some electricians tape adhered to the glass under the strips.

Perhaps it was the absence of the membrane and not the mastic on your friends car.
