low oil pressure on startup?

Hi.

I changed the oil & filter on my 1990 Vogue 3.9L the week I brought it with Penrite HPR30 and a Fram filter. It takes about 10 seconds for the oil light to go out now. The filter that was originally on there was a Coopers and I dont remember the oil light being an issue. I know that Fram have a bad reputation on some car forums. Is it worth changing to a Mahle oil filter which my local Land Rover specialist uses? $15 for a Mahle or is it worth going $40 for a genuine?

Has anyone else experienced this oil pressure problem?

It may be oil related more than filter related - a ryco z9 is fine if it gets changed regularly.

Strange as it sounds the 3.5 RR in my 89 prefers 15w40 rather than 20w50, which is what HPR30 is (According to their website anyway).

It's more to do with temp and work rather than wear. If I was operating in temps 40 and above and towing stuff, the HPR30 would be the go - in cooler areas HPR30 could be too thick for the Range rover engine.

You'd expect a 20 yo engine to need thicker oil - go figure.

some filters have a drain back valve in then to keep the oil filter full of oil for the next start up. this shouldnt be an issue with the rover V8 filter cos of how it sits in, ie holds oil cos its pointing down. ive never used a fram so i cant comment on them but ive used countless ryco's and coopers with many types of oil and have never had an issue.....till the oil pump pressure relief got stuck:eek:

Full tilt here is under $20, even less if you have 'contacts' ;).

I also think the oil is just a bit too thick when cold, so takes a while to get thrown around the engine.

You may also notice the engine is a bit more rattly at startup and until up to operating temperature, again due to the more viscous oil when cold.

Not sure about the ambient temps in Auckland, but a thinner oil especially thinner when cold might be the go.

I would also expect it to get worse in winter when the temp drops.

A bit of feedback:

I changed the oil filter to a Mahle brand which was supplied by my local LR parts store. The Mahle was taller than the Fram and the oil light goes out immediatley at startup, unlike the Fram :D.


The RR even seems to go a little bit better now but I think could be the placebo effect :p.
