they mount up off of the accelerator pedal and the steering column. they work sort of like a choke, step on the accelator till the engines doing the revs you want pull out the hand throttle cable till it takes up the slack and twist.

to release twist it the other way.

they take about an hour to install.

A little more difficult on the TD5 Defender :D:D:D

There's a hand throttle like Blknight describes on a 2.8 litre Rodeo TDi, about 2000 MY. Works on the accel pedal. Shouldn't be hard to source from a wreckers.

Hmm interesting and probably illegal to retrofit !

If the cable for the hand throttle connects to the accelerator pedal it should work with any engine, including a TD5.

Something like a choke cable with a reliable twist lock as Blknight.aus suggested, or a gear change cable and lever from a push bike would should be suitable.

I have an engine driven hydraulic pump for winching and plan to rig a hand throttle using a lever and cable from a push bike. I hope to mount the lever on the gear stick.

I doubt they are illegal, as I believe vehicles are modified with hand throttles for some disabled drivers.

Actually I now remember the Rodeo one acts in a continuous manner, you rotate the knob until the engine speed is where you want it, rotate anticlockwise to release slowly. It's quite a precise action from what I remember. Should be very easy to get out as it's just held in to the plastic skirt under the dash.

Wouldn't the computer start to through error messages on the Defender TD5, and the accellerator become a safety issue ?
I like the idea of a hand throttle while offroading in rough terrain but I wonder if by doing that you could turn a TD5 into a TOYOTA PRIUS (automatic acceleration mode !!!!!!).

In all the 4wdriving I've done, in the vehicles with a hand throttle... I've never used the thing :o

Never even crossed my mind to be truthful....

I like to control the vehicle, and the 'toes hard against the kick panel' trick provides enough control for me to be happy.

I had messed with the idea of an electronic switch to do a TD5 'idle up' for using winching, showers etc... but just.. well.... meh! CBF :(

However, with the anti-stall etc... If the terrain is that rough, why wouldnt you be climbing on 'tick over' (idle) in which case a hand throttle is not required :D

They come in handy when jump starting a vehicle, just wind up and wait

I would never recommend using a hand throttle while driving, But its ideal for bumping up the alternator charge rate, like for winching, lighting up a crash scene, jump starting or simply recharging the battery. As it's mechanical it can't show up as an error message:) (cue next year's model, cute asian voice: "Yoo heff yo foot on de thottle, plees tek it off")

My brother's county has one - he likes it for fast charging and for hot water shower warm up.

I haven't had anything to do with TD5's, but I do understand they have a "fly by wire" accelerator.

If pushing the accelerator pedal with your foot does not give error codes then I don't see why pulling on the accelerator pedal via a hand throttle cable would give error codes!

I haven't fitted one yet, but I got a Defender V8 Choke cable. It fits on the RHS of the steering column, under the rubber bung. There's a mounting plate for it in the shroud already.

I was thinking that I'd have to route it to the fuel pump throttle (300Tdi), but now I'll have to look at the pedal idea.

If you've ever driven up a really steep and boulder strewn track, where you're bumped around in the seat, you would have noticed that your foot goes up and down on the throttle. This then makes the bumping worse and compromises the traction. A gentle and steady throttle from the cable can easily provide a steadier ascent. Plus all else that's been said about times of increased load on the charging system.

Ah ha ! I;d always wondered what the hell that blanked off hole was intended for and up until now no-one could tell me ! Well done.

That's my hand brake release. I thought aout getting a second peddle and modding it so I could use it as a hand throttle ut couldn't be bothered.

I know a guy who used the hand throttle to set the revs as a sort of cruise control...

Havent seen them since Ser2A

Got one on my Series III Stage 1. It's a chunky affair and is attached to the inside of the firewall, just above the gearbox tunnel on the passenger side. It reaches through the firewall to a lever that attaches to a push-rod which pushes a lever that rotates a rod that extends to the drivers side and which has a lever attached to a cable that is attached to the accelerator cable, and...

You set the lever, push on the accelerator peddle and the engine sits at that setting :D

Photo attached. You can see the lever just above the gear lever.

Hello All,

Just my 2 cents worth, i\I have used a Hand throttle control from a 45 series landcruiser, mounts to the pedal and under the dash.

Will try to post photos later.

We used them on the farm if you had to feed hay out by your self.
set the hand throttle and then jump on the back and start feeding the hay out, when you came close to a fence jump in do a u turn and away you go
