View Full Version : Locker in front or rear?

I have bought a single ARB locker, and don't want to bother getting another. I would have thought running it in the rear would be best, but have been advised otherwise. The front does make sense in a way, but I'm still not sure.
Advice please.

Try a search on this one, alot of people have asked this question. :)
My opinion: go the rear.
If you lock the front you lose virtually all steering.
Up hills, all the weight and traction goes to the rear wheels, so again a front locker is not very helpful.
With twin lockers, ARB set it up so that the back must be locked before the front can be locked anyway, so you never can use just the front without the rear.

Rear...
Some Patrol owners fit to the front as they rely on the rear LSD...
Rear is always better though, as you push up hills easier than 'pulling' up the hill... Your rear diff is loaded up with more weight climbing...

Rear first IMO

Most definately the rear.
The rear end is where most load is in a Landy, especially when climbing. The rear is also a lot stonger than the front and you dont get side slipping from the rear like you do from the front - mind you this could also be because I never run the front locked unless the rear is locked also.

Another for the rear, also the rear helps when goining down a steep rutted hill as it keeps the vehicle pointing straight and stops it lurching forward, can't do that with a front as you have a lot less steeing.

Go the rear. As said steering will be a problem in the front;)

Cheers fellas. I figured the rear also tracks a different arc(turning on the spot more) tending to make it break traction easier
Does the guy in the shop deserve a slap, for saying go the front? He said all the guys at comps go the front first, he did have a Toyota though, and was advised by someone apparently more knowledgeable that fitted his locker.

All the guys at the comps go front and rear when installing and seem to use the fronts only when they're doing digs. Actually they're in and out with the fronts heaps from what I see because the courses can be so tight.

As someone posted earlier the only reason for fitting a single locker to the front is becomes you have a newish Patrol and they have a fantastic LSD in the rear (But LSDs wear over time).
Toyota's have poor LSDs and Land Rovers don't have them.
The rear end is doing most of the work when climbing, and climbing is when you need it, as most of the weight is on the rear, so as Disco White said "Yeah! stick it in the rear"

Yeh stick it in her rear and you will be loving it!
Having done the front locker in my county without doing the rear due to breaking the original, and having gone the other way on my disco, the rear locker is way more usable and gets you alot further then just a front locker, also as others have said you loose so much steering with the front locked.
