Ubuntu hassles

Hi all,
I bought a ubuntu mag that came with the cd.
Its got 32 bit on 1 side,64 bit on da other.Version 9.04...:)
I put it into my desktop(a 5-6 yr old AMD Athlon 64 processor 3200) and I got to the menu--clicked the download bit.....:)
Then.......it came up ERROR,then it came up with a code(3850,3851,3852etc,etc )that continued on forever.:(
The only way that I could stop it was turn off the puter then start again.
It did the same thing again...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Anyway I left for a few weeks,then today I started up the puter with the cd in drive(as instructed)..This time it came up with download & start running from cd or learn more...I pressed the download and start from cd--it then gave me 3 options
1. reboot (which I have done numerous times and it goes back to the previous window)
2. I want to manually reboot(does nothing)
3. Help me to boot from cd(which downloads something but it always returns to the previous program.

I have also tried it on my notebook(Toshiba sat pro-13"),same as desktop:angrylock:

So how do I get ubuntu on my desktop/or notebook without having all these hassles :)

My guess is a faulty CD is causing your problems. Try another copy.

Sorry I can't be more definite, but my installs and upgrades have always gone smoothly.

Given that Ubuntu is now up to version 9.10 I'd download a copy of that instead.

yeah id download a new one also, i recently installed 9.10 because my windows decided to pack up, ubuntu was all done in about 15 minutes, its about 600-odd mb from memory, burn the .iso to a cd/dvd and it should all go smoothly

I was about to suggest that if you are going to download a copy, you might look at Xubuntu. It uses a different GUI which allows older machines to run faster. I have it running happily on a machine about twice the age of yours.

As I was checking the address to show you where to find it, I saw something that suggests there is a version for AMD64 and one for i386. Is it possible you are trying to load a version intended for an Intel processor on an AMD?

Hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about will come along soon just in case that is all bollocks.

I agree it is probably a faulty CD. Was it "Linux Format"? I have had around 30% of their CDs faulty, although rarely with other magazines. They will replace it on request, although if you have a reasonable internet connection, downloading and burning your own CD is probably more reliable. The only advantage of the magazine one is it may have some improved software selections above those standard with Ubuntu.

The Intel versions should work with your AMD, especially the i386 version (The Athlon is 386 compatible). Not sure whether the 64 bit version would - I don't have a 64bit processor!

Any of the optional GUIs should work with the Athlon - I have both KDE and Gnome running on my similar vintage Celeron. Xubuntu is faster, but both the others are quite acceptable, although you will be happier with more than about 512MB memory - mine ran perfectly well on 384MB but runs a lot better with 1GB.

I just remembered I downloaded a version of it from the net last week(Think it was 9.10).I'll find it and put it onto a cd then try it.....

have been running ubuntu amd64 for a while now with no promlems. i think in your case that there is a windows bug preventing you from overwriting it, (had the same problem to start). go to your system specs and see exactly what they are and then download a fresh copy of ubuntu to suit you specs, burn the .iso image to a cd and try again. if you still have troubles do a zero wipe of the hard drive (google it and you will find a prog to do it) and after the wipe is complete restart the computor with the ubuntu cd in and it should just install. WARNING if you zero wipe then there in no trace of anything on your hard drive, sugested program d-ban.

If you use bigpond then they have ubuntu in their free downloads area so it won't affect your usage :)

havent been with bloop-pond in years---from the radio station that I listen to---- someone rings up daily with their problems with the telstra bloop-pond.

It's what Kunbuntu is based on.
Also there is also a medibuntu for the medical profession.
But more importantly, it's the key that unlocks the shackles of those that use the Microsoft dominated capitolist swine systems LOL, and saves them from the blue screen of death.

I went the other way, from PClinos to Kubuntu. I found I liked the .debs better than .rpms
Am about to try the new release in a couple of sleeps

Went from ubuntu to kubuntu which i found better but pclos i find is closer to a windows GUI and its much easier to install and use programs.

The day that linux have an image PP of the caliber of Photoshop of Nikon Capture NX2 I will use linux instead of win :)

Why don't you just have a dual boot system.
I use linux 99.999999% of the time. and the .000001% of the time I HAVE to use Win for a program, I just boot up to up in Win instead of Linux:cool:

I would like to know if it is possible to install linux and some of the applications in large USB stick, so I can have my OS and raw images in any PC booting from the USB.
That would be a great iway to have something private and transportable :cool:
