time to replace the viscous / fan ??

Hi guys,

my trusty 200 tdi Disco gets a little warm (only when towing the boat).

seems to take a while to cool.

yesterday the alt / batt red light would occasionally flash on when towing my boat home ..the temp was half way between half and three quaters.

seems time to replace the fan with a falcon one

is that the consensus ??

that or its time to service the cooling system and get the radiator rodded out.

Id do both.

In standard form, it should do the job. So. I'd be pulling out the radiator, flushing etc before any upgrading.

The front thermos cut in with the air conditioning. Might be worth checking they're coming on.

hi. it seems to me, and I don't pretend to be an expert, but I think there is probably another underlying problem with your vehicle. The fact that the alternator light is coming on combined with the engine running hotter would suggest that maybe the fan belt is slipping. there are other issues to explore, eg timing, cooling system, head. Your car should be able to cope with towing a boat without overheating. Good luck!:)

having the radiator serviced (incl rodding) usually works wonders - they pressure test them when they reassemble them too - all costs less than $100 if you remove it from the vehicle and take it to the radiator place

on reassembly , check the oil cooler connections - they seem to be the most difficult to get right

it's a good opportunity to clean the intercooler out as well

On a related issue when the viscous hub fails does the fan slip or seize up?? If it slips I can understand overheating but if it seizes I assume it just works as a fixed fan, noisy and no overheating.

The Viscous on my 101 has seized and I want to replace it but it is unique to the 101 (not the same as other 3.5 V8s) so I am not sure yet what alternatives may work.

It can do both. If its seized then yes it will spin non stop but it can also get a lot of free play and not spin fast enough.

A simple way to check fan clutch.When motor is at normal temp carefully try to stop fan with a paint brush.You may need to remove top fan shroud to access fan.This has been posted on this site many times,a search would help.
If fan can be stopped its stuffed.
Did one on wed cost $180 odd to replace.:)

Not sure if this is typical - but the viscous fan should cause an audible roar to be emitted from under the hood when it cuts in, well at least that's what mine used to do until it crapped itself, and now does again following fittment of a second new one - yes second because the first new one died in 2 weeks!!

Also as said, get the rad rodded, and check the pump bearings 'cause it sounds like they may be siezing causing the belt to slip, and the themostat too:)

This does not mean the fan is stuffed at Normal temp.
