My Bro has a 1998 P38A HSE.
The original radio CD player has pooped itself !!!
Does anyone have a working unit that can fit straight in, or advise us on what it can be replaced with ?
Radio repair bloke said it needed a new head ?
Would cost $300 plus another $300 to fit, bugger that.
Any idea's.
Tar.

Do you need the radio or the CD stacker?
Clarion are quite reasonable with repairs if you wanted to get in touch with them, or source a 2nd hand unit from SoB on eBay.
Where's the $300 for fitment come from?
The radio slides in place & the stacker's held in by a few bolts.

I am not really sure Scott.
Bro has been down the bottom of NSW for a while and asked me on
the phone to look around.
I think he will be here next week so I will find out what's going on.

While you are talking to Clarion ask about having an extra connection added to allow an Ipod type device to be connected. They did this and serviced the unit which included a new screen for the read out for me here in the UK for £60. Now have radio, CD stacker and Ipod from the original unit.

If you do decide to go after market, be aware that on the Premium System fitted to the HSE's you need to attenuate the outputs, as there is an amplifier in each door. Not many aftermarket places will be aware of this, and will only realise after they've taken to your car with a hacksaw, and cut all the main looms.
My unit **** itself and it turned out to be a dry joint somewhere on the PCB.

I wonder to where the aux input is wired? I've just ordered a new LCD screen (and lamps and covers) so I could fit the aux socket at the same time. I might have to ring Clarion back on Monday to see if they'll fax the info to me.
I bought this cable: Ipod Connecting Cable for CLARION Car STEREOS w/ C-BUS - eBay, Car Audio Cables, iPod MP3 Accessories, Electronics. (end time 17-Dec-09 16:24:45 AEDST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120381254475&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT) for the iPod but they sent the wrong one and it doesn't work.

A little music player made by Apple that some people get quite religious about. Check here Apple - iPod + iTunes (http://www.apple.com/au/itunes/)
The beauty of having one of these integrated in to your car stereo is that you never need to worry about carrying tapes or CD's around again. Just upload all the music you want to the iPod and then play it back through your car stereo if it has the right connection. When you want to add more music, unplug the iPod from the car, plug it in to your computer and put more music on.
If your Bro and his P38A are near Canberra over the Christmas break, I'd be happy to have a look at the radio for him and give him an opinion.
Cheers, Paul.

Thank you, handy to know these things.
I'll do without tho. The wireless in my vehicles have never been turned on.
I think there is a wireless in the house somewhere but not sure whether
it was thrown out. All that noise droning on and on irritates me.
Dont mind the music coming from the little people down the bottom of
the garden tho !!
Thanks for the offer Paul but I think the Bro will be at Emerald for a few weeks over Christmas and I think the P38 will be left with Bruce Davis
for a big service. Bro flying into Mackay.
Thanks Ron.
Cheers.

I asked Clarion Australia about it today. They don't know of the mod. They do know of the mod where one can activate the an aux input by removing the stacker (below).

After a week, they still haven't responded to my emails nor eBay message.
But I have got my bits from Clarion so I'll do the repairs.

You recall earlier in this thread I bought a cable to connect to the 13-pin DIN to the iPod and it didn't work.
Well, I connected the link between pin 5 and pin 9 as detailed above and it didn't work. I've pulled the main circuit board out of the radio and traced the wiring. Pins 5 and 9 go well into the PCB but aren't connected anywhere.
That modification was apparently for an earlier version of the Clarion C-Bus connection. The problem is that the PU9836A radio detects that there is no CD pack connected and won't accept any audio input from the 13-pin connector. I need to fool the head unit or to wire in an alternative Aux input. I wish I had one that had already been modded to see how it was done.
I'll press on. If I sort something out, I'll let you know.

I haven't bothered with it any more.
I bought a brand new Fusion CA-IP500 for under $100 off eVilBay but have yet to fit it. This radio accepts an iPod inside it and as we have a few spare iPods at home.....
