Hey,
had a look around and saw some threads on TD5 for a RR, and issues mentioned were electric's.
was wondering if anyone had any incite as to how a 200TDI would work,
my manual 200 tdi disco is currently absent of any straight panels, so was looking for a replacement body. saw a 91RR on ebay that had engine and gearbox issues for reasonably cheap.
would this be an economical swap or would i be better sticking to a disco body?
Thanks
Adam
Edit: engine and gearbox have just been reconditioned

From what I have heard it is a good conversion. Pretty straightforward, but you will need to weld new engine mounts onto the chassis.

there was a RR with a 300tdi at blinman this year, seemed to be be a good combo, whent well. i think it would be an easy swap over

That Rangie was at Blinman the last 2 years, he is actually keen to move it on for another project.
Think he said it ran all day at 110km/h no problems with trailer on.
From memory it cost him $10k though.
Might be talking it up a little to get better price not sure.
Look to be a neat finish though.
I would go the 300 though, parts are easier to source.

Theres a thread on here I put up with JustinC's RRC with a 300tdi put in it. Its a great fit, like factory.

LOL he should spend his money on tyers.LOL
yes it was a nice set up. im not so sure on the 200 being hard to get parts, mybe a bit harder in aussie becouse thay were not here for long, but internet and pommy land thay seem to have no problems.

It probably is way cheaper to import quite right.
I am self-employed however and like to support the Aussie economy even if its costs more. In the long run when there is no business incentive we could be in real trouble.
I shop around a bit but also like to shop near where I live in I can.
that way I also support my very near economy.
If I was to spend 3-4hrs on research and not be productive at work I loose say $60-80/hr.
I ring my local tyre guy, make out I am his long lost mate and get his best price and tell him I like the weights on inside of rim and I will pay cash.
Save me in long run and if I have a tyre problem I just go up the road not some distant internet dealer or store 50 miles away.
My theory of course but thats all it is. Theory.
I recently paid $280 per tyre for 245/75/16 Coopers ATR.
Seemed fair and he did exactly as I asked.:D:D:D:D

cool and i get your point.
but i was responding to the comment if tdi 200 parts being hard to get.
but if you have a local land rover guy who is preperd to get the tdi parts off the internet and then sell them to you thats cool as well

I'm sure there is a conversion kit available from the UK.Not sure if it was for the 200 or 300TDI. But I'm sure some of our UK members will be able to enlighten us.

Unfortunately this will be my daily, i thought about bying a sedan for daily and doing a completely custom body, you know cut both ends and end up with incredible approach and depature angles, but i can't afford to have it off the road too long.
Thanks everyone for the advice and opinions. think i'm gona go for the RR body, going for one on ebay, but if any one has one in approprite condition for this let me know, i'd perfer to put money into our hands.
Thanks

I don’t know, but thinking about it would be either
1 making and welding up engine mounts, gearbox TC mounts. Making up new drive shafts ( possibly) and radiator mounts, exorst. Gear levers, that’s about it.
2 cutting off and moving some body mounts, gear levers radiator. I think that’s it.
Rear seat belt attachments?

some people have purchased Early 1990 rangies for under $2000 without gearbox/motor isues so you do wnt to pay very little for a Rangie. I would do this conversion myself if I had a 200tdi, but think I would prefer a 300 tdi.

Mounts on a 200 disco will be the same as a classic. The (inner) bodys are almost identical except of course for the back. And I read somewhere that the Rangie and Disco have a seperate engine wiring loom that attaches to the rest of the vehicle. Obviously the ECU wiring would be separate and made redundant.
So in the perfect world it could be a very easy swap.

Yer i know 200tdi's are **** :P(sacrcasim) but as it is 200TDI is what i got, and at the moment it's looking like under 700, with some parts that i will be able to keep as spares or sell to regain some. anyone need parts of a 92 RR?? lol

Oh ben!!!
YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF GOD!!! lol
And this will be when, while removeing accessories from the disco, i find that the chassis is either bent or cracked, thats been my luck of late....sigh
So sounds like RR body on Disco chassis. Radiator? What will that require?
Whats the engine bay size like compared to a disco?
On a side note, seeing as i'm gona have to get this engineered, anyone know an engineer in newcastle that they recomend. also how hard is it to get 35's engineered, do it all at the same time?

Hey your **** 200Tdi will out last anything else that you put in there (Thread will now spontaneously explode into a "which diesel is the best" argument) ;)
YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF GOD!!!
Yes, yes I do
The engine bay is also near as dammit identical to the Rangie, so it should all fit but you may have to drill a few holes to put brackets ect.....
From what I understand, the disco shares the same axles, chassis, inner body (kinda) engine gearbox setups as the late Rangie
disclaimer: Everything what I have said is from reading things not experience so if it doesn't fit, my godly words aren't to blame. But I'm 99.6367229% sure you will be fine....
Good luck!

ok so it has been a while, and unfortunately i have been unable to find a rangie body suitable for my location and budget. however i have been able to find a replacement disco body in better nick.
I was after anyone who has either done a body swap or knows of a way to do it without a whole heap of fancy toys.
so basically lifting the body above engine height to roll chassis in and out, any ideas?
Regards

PS(i guess this way i won't have to change my name :P)

I would go back to your origenal plan. I did this with a 1994 Rangie and fitted a 300tdi into it. An easy job as Landrover fitted 300tdi's into these cars.
All I had to do was remove the old v8 engine mounts. And weld in the ones off the donner car.Everythig else just bolted up from the donner car.
Therefore one would assume that as Landrover produced Rangies with 200tdi engines, it would be a simply conversion.
As you know the Rangie is a bit bigger in the back , and has that wonderfull tailgate.
Find a Rangie the same age as your Disco. Sell the engine ,gearbox etc while still in the car.[Get a better price if you can show that its running]and than go to work. The result will be a great car.

As much as i would love to continue working on converting a rangie(i love the look) i need to get this conversion done, the cost of fueling the V8 is killing me, i will most defiantly look at an engine conversion down the track, but maybe with a little more time and money up my sleeve.
I'd like to thank all of you for your help!

G'day DiscoScout :)
1991 saw the first of the factory fitted 200TDI motors into the Range Rover in front of the ZF 4HP22 Auto (disco one) and that was upgraded in 1994 to the 300TDI motor, these motors replaced the 4 cyl VM diesel of the earlier vehicles, so there should not be any problems doing the change, the 300TDI would be the better motor (quieter, and less vibrations) parts are also more readily available here in Aust, the running gear on the Classic Rangie is basicaly the same as the Disco, but seeing that you have a 200TDI it should be a simple drop-in :)
Rego change to diesel should not present a problem as it was a factory model
cheers
