View Full Version : Transfer Case Capacity

Hi Guys,

Am in the process of restoring an '89 classic to her former glory.

Changed the transfer case oil on the weekend, and it didn't take anywhere near the capacity they mention in the Haynes manual.

It took approx 2L before it started coming out the fill hole, whereas the manual says it should take nearer to 3!? Am i missing something?

It's a 5 speed, with a Borg Warner T-case. Other than that I'm not sure of any designations etc. It has had a engine upgrade to the later 4L engine, but I'm not sure whether the gearbox was upgraded at the same time.

She seems to run fine, and I checked the oil level again after a decent drive and it seems fine...still a bit concerned tho.

Any help appreciated.

Huh? transfer case not auto.

I think that 1 and bit litres is correct for a Borg Warner.
I just fill until the full hole starts leaking, that's all it takes. I think you may be thinking of a LT230.

1.7 L dry for a BW - 2L during a change is good. If you were facing downhill a bit that would account for the difference. Either way sufficient oil is in there.

Mine survived on about 250CC for about 1000Km about 5 years ago when a workshop who shall remain nameless removed it to change the rear main seal on the motor, must have leaned it over on the floor and then didn't check the level on reassembly.
They are tough.

Thanks guys - have put me at ease. I did fill it till it started overflowing, so at least I won't be stressing about doing massive damage through a simple mistake. :)
