:mad:Alas, what is probably one of the less fence-able D3's in Perth was stolen overnight. Thieves scaled 3m fence, broke into the house, took the keys, and stole my D3 (but semi-thankfully didn't steal much else). Since it's the quiet V8 it didn't wake 3 neighbours whose bedrooms overlook the lane it went down. So if anyone around Perth sees a gold V8 HSE (only one in WA) rego, 1CMP 345,with a black ARB wicnh bar, and a spare tyre carrier (but no spare mounted on it) please call the WA police.

Final update: My D3 was found the next morning (last Wed) completely incinerated. We couldn't even identify the engine block (it's alloy and was melted into a blob). The police are confident a professional group took it, used it for a ram-raid and did a superb job of torching it. No doubt having160 litres of 98 octane in the main and aux tanks assisted in the melt. Only the stainless steel exhaust pipe was intact. To cart it off, it took a front end loader 4 shovel fulls to put it in a dump truck. Of course this means that there is no dispute with the insurer on if it is repairable and today I just received payment for it (7 days. Is that a record or what?) There was also what totalled up to $10k of camping and 4WD gear in the back which I hope is insured by the household policy. We had wanted to be off camping by now. I'm a bit of a documentation nut (comes with being a project manager) and had reciepts for everything which was in back and presumably melted or vapourised (but we'll never know). Now it's at earliest May delivery for a D4 then inevitably 6 months to get it set up the way I want.

Dingmark jim, that really sucks mate, I can only imagine how angry you must be, only recently having my house robbed.
Its just horrible when these no good crumbs of society interfere with hard working & honest peoples lives!! May the next car they torch explode in their face.
Allthough its a bit of a compliment that a Disco was chosen for the ram raid though, testament to a solid truck;)

Do the police have any footage of the ram raid... would be good for your collection of LR memorabilia !

always made me wonder why they bother auctioning burnt out shells like that..... would be a lot less drama sending it straight to the crusher.....

Ouch! That is indeed my ex-D3. I hadn't seen the photos of the shell - only the remnants left at site after the front end loader scooped up most of the bits. The fire is a good indicator of what happens when 110 litres of petrol + 2 spare tyres directly above the fuel tanks (one a near-new MTR, the other a worn out Scorpion Zero) can get burning. Curiously enough the Mitchell West hitch and the Locksafe installed in the hitch look okay (but I don't want it back). I suspect that the key inside the safe may be a bit worse for wear though. The engine looks as melted as the cops described to me. The oil pan was a molten blob on the ground left there after the shell was towed off.
A couple of years I had a bit of an EPB "incident" where the RR brake dragged, causing a tyre to catch slightly on fire and the rubber oversleeve on the fuel line to smoulder. Makes me even more glad that we had the chance to pour water on the red-hot brake and prevent a fire.
I have a new D4 on order (turns out the gov't car purchase incentive + the insurance payout kept me cash neutral) for delivery in April - so I expect to see it in May. Life goes on.

I'm getting a 3.0 diesel. The reason I had a V8 D3 was that it was one of the early orphaned D3 V8's with only 5 seats and I got it for $18k less than a diesel back then (and maybe spend an extra $3k on fuel so came out way ahead). I only want 5 seats but don't want to pay a premium for a petrol engine this time. I am planning to get rock sliders, underbody alloy protection, aux fuel tank, 2nd battery somewhere, and a hidden winch (maybe hydraulic), Kaymar rear + 2 spares, but probably no roo bar. The original D3 roo bar was because someone ran into me 2 yrs ago and their insurer got me the roo bar + winch free (it cost less than the OEM LR items). Since it was someone in my household who left the back door unlocked that the sc@m theives entered, SWMBO is being totally accepting of the cost of any modifications and I might as well get it done before there's a policy change!:D
From the sales pitch, the 0-100 time for the diesel is probably about the same as my V8 was with the extra weight of a bullbar up front. I'll have to do some testing. I will miss the wonderful roar out the RAI when flying up sand dunes though....

In case any one is interested, I've put in pictures of what my stolen and burnt D3 looked like. I suspect it is now a crumpled wad in a container heading to China for re-cycling. Our wonderful machines can indeed burn easily. I've decided I'll be putting the fire extinguisher very close at hand in the soon-to-arrive (:D) D4.
