Hi all,

I have a 99 Td5 ES 160k's that I have owned for about 18 months.
I have spent about 5k on it to keep it running.

Now it needs a new auto gearbox - have a quote of $ 3300 for a reconditioned box fitted.

also there is a clunking noise when I steer from side to side whilst moving.

also all of the ABS/ traction lights have come on.
there is also a problem with the airflow meter in the engine

all in all it will cost about 6k to fix.

I have 2 decisions.

1/ fix the TD5and hopefully not have to go through this again.

2/ buy another car - looking at possible a second hand D3 tdv6 2005 for about 50k with 73k's on it.

is it worth fixing the td5?

have d3's improved with reliability? or should I look for a different brand?

many thanks,
luke

big jump from 6k to 50k

you never get your money back which ever way you go...

so it boils down to will you be happy with the td5 after you spend the coin ?

I just want a reliable 4wd.

The way I see it, the TD5 is going to cost me 3k a year in depreciation and 5k a year in maintenance.

The d3 will cost me $2000 in maintenance and 7k a year in depreciation.

not a lot of difference.

Is the d3 a reliability dog?

once youve got it fixed with no breakdowns and ignoring fuel, tyres and oils my normal yearly cost is $500ish in parts. (actually that'd near on cover oils) plus rego+ insurace

one of my threads breaks down a fairly intensive replacement parts list as part of the 100K Km service that I do. and that still gets change from $2K

on the box front you have one of the zf22's if youve killed one of them it can be regutted with a fair swag of parts from the zf24.

sounds silly but if your happy with Discovery you got fix it and keep it on road, your just about over the major replacement process

If I was spending 50K , this place would be a small fraction of the decision process,,

The small fraction starts here---

I'd fix it....my D2 td5 doesnt cost me a thing....except for servicings.....about 18mths ago changed starter motor and fuel pump.....but I dont see those as reliability issues...and that is all in 175000km.
