View Full Version : Sheared tensioner bracket

Friday night I pulled up to set of lights and while sitting there my battery light came on on the dash. When the lights changed, I turned left only to find that my power steering had gone. Immediately pulled over to have a looksie but in the dark, without a torch, could see nothing. Anyway, long story cut short, the RAC guy found that the tensioner pully had ripped away from the bracket, leaving the tensioner pulley intact, but obviously taking out the belt with it. Motor was only serviced on Wednesday just gone, and there wasn'y any noticeable/obvious looking issues, and it was running an absolute dream.

First look it appears that everything else looks OK, fan intact, and all the other wheels/pulleys seem to be OK too.

I've attached some pics to show what's sheared off.
Am I right in thinking that this is all one unit with the alternater bracket?
Anyone else experienced this problem?
Where in Perth could I expect to find one pretty quickly?
And more so, any ideas why/how this could happen?

Again, at first look, it does look possibly like metal fatigue. Any thoughts from anyone?

Cheers,

Hi Kieren
The tensioner seems to be intact, they are the same as a TD5 tensioner. It appears that the bracket it bolts to has failed.I wonder if the power steer pump,AC compressor or ACE pump(if fitted) seized causing the failure.
You need to contact the 2 main wreckers,Linn Rover and West Coast Rover for a secondhand unit.Would be worth calling Jordan Rover Tech,Discovery Autos and Beechboro 4x4 to see if they have one laying around.
GOODLUCK
Andrew

PS if you are stuck for a tensioner I have just replaced mine whilst replacing my alternator. If it is an issue replacing yours you are welcome to use it till you can get a new one.Its working fine,I still have the "chirp" when shutting down so I need to replace the other pulley.Would want it back eventually to keep in the "touring spares" box.

Yes, it is part of the Alt bracket, TRS has them for sale as last year we had an identical issue, a thor engine in a 2001 P38a. Unfortunately the vehicle was driven a further 5 or 6 km with no coolant circulating:o and this caused irreperrable damage:(
Anyway, the vehicle above was suspected of being in a collision at one point so I wasn't surprised to see the bracket cracked. Possibly, because it is in a vulnerable position? Although now this is another one, same failure, maybe it is a fatigue issue???

Dont belive everything you read on Ebay JC:cool::cool::cool:.
I saw one a couple of weeks ago advertised, genuine part no matching the one on the box I had.
Add listed it as fitting Disco/DefenderTD5,Disco/P38a 4.0/4.6.
Thanks

Too right there Andrew! The main diff is that the Td5 one works on the back of the belt, and the Thor one has a grooved pulley runs on the inside o the belt, both different diameters also. When you sit them next to each other too, they are totally different in appearance.

Good'ol Ebay advertisers:mad:

Whoa!
That's not nice at all Kieren!
As for where to find one - what Andy said, but I think Linn or West Coast are possibly the best bet??
Good luck!

I think you should listen very closely to that red Disco,
I think it's telling you something ....

I WANT A TD5 :wasntme:

(Don't you agree Beefy?:D)

Seriously, I hope that it is just the bracket and you will have her running shortly. Maybe in time for the 28th Dec up to Cervanties. Let us know if you need a hand, I'll be off from Thursday to the 11th of Jan. SWMBO might have a couple of things planned for me to do but we will make a plan.

Cheers,

Jurgens
