View Full Version : 2A SWB Diesel Rebuild

Firstly i would like to say after waiting a few years and after a few let downs i FINALLY got my hands on a 2A SWB 2.25 Diesel :). I also got a 109 Ex military Land Rover as a bonus! :) and i must say i got them for a great price :).

Well i am in the process of (roughly) planning my rebuild, it will have to be on a tight budget as i am only living off a casual income and own too many Land Rovers. But come imagine parting ways with any of them!

Here is a list of the things i have seen which need working on or replacing.

Brakes:
Master Cylinder
4x Wheel cylinders
And New Brake shoes all round

Suspension:
All new rubbers
New limiting straps

(i plan on cleaning up the original leafs as they look to be in OK condition and living with the shocks)

Transmission:
The gearbox etc is in great order! which was a great surprise :)

Motor:
Cooling system leak
Other then that starts and runs well.

Exhaust:
There is about 1ft of pipe missing which will need replacing, not sure what condition the rest of the exhaust system is in.

Electrical:
Needs new Battery
And a good look over all as no lights are working could be as simple as bulbs or fuses.

Body:
Couple dents on front end
Paint well worn
Some rust spots nothing to dramatic need new passenger door top Driver side is in OK condition.

The rear cross member is in need of a replacement and i am yet to look at the rest of the chassie.

Conclusion:
Well the above is all the things i have have discovered there will no doubt be more problems along the way. The rebuild process is not to achieve a perfect example of a Series Land Rover more or less i just hope to get it back on the road as cheaply as possible and as reliable as possible.

I will post some pictures up tomorrow!

Kind Regards James.

I hope to move them up closer to the house as i don't trust having them on the property out of sight... plus its too far to go every time i just want to look at them.

chassis number should be on the rear left shackle bracket. (ie: the upside down triangle bit on the chassis that the spring shackle bolts to) Take a wire brush and a rag - it will be buried under rust.

There should also be a nomenclature plate either in the dash (usually passenger side) or on the side of the seat box. It will look something like this:

Even if you don't plan on getting to it anytime soon, it would be handy to know what the numbers are. ;) You never know - you might have one that went to Vietnam, or one that there are pictures of in the archives. :D

That shorty looks great too! :D What year is it? It's going to be a big job but I'm sure you will do it justice. :)

There are some nice examples there! looks like you too have nice project or two or many to work on as will! i look forward to seeing the finished product. You have inspired me to find out more... i know the chances of it actually being from service etc to be slim but may as ell have a look :)

That shorty looks great too! :D What year is it? It's going to be a big job but I'm sure you will do it justice. :)

Thank you! i love the Shorty i have been wanting one since i as long as i can remember and this one is perfect i always wanted a 2a and a 2.25 Diesel in Bronze Green...as for its year i believe it too be a 62-66? as the diesels changed to 2.25 in 62? and they changed to one wiper motor in 67? but i will get the numbers for a specific date :) I don't think i will do it as much justice as others on here would, as this is my first project... and im new to a lot of the things which need doing and money is tight. But non the less that doesn't stop me from dreaming of the first day i put that rego sticker on and hit the tracks :)

Thats the attitude! :D

I started out much the same way - a cheap shorty and a lot to learn. ;)

Still haven't finished, but not far off. Have you named your shorty yet?

PS - longing4alandy has a thread going on his 2A Shorty aswell. He is converting his to diesel so it would probably be of interest to you. ;)

Of course i have named him! i couldnt imagine not naming a 4x4... my list of babies are as follows.

Range Rover- Oscar
Discovery- Grover
109- Rambo
88- Skippy or Skip

and then the Sierra named Busta due to the harsh life i give it... its not the straightest Sierra.

I like Skippy - cool name! B)

I thought skippy suited it the very first time i took it for a drive :) gotta love that shorty hop. You havnt seen the least of what i put that zook through! i must say its won a spot in my heart im fond of the little Sierras now...

Here is a short clip of me on one of the tracks just 100m from my door step :)

I have been looking around doing some pricing for getting the brakes done on the old girl so i can move her around the property.

I have found a new master cylinder for $100 and a set of wheel cylinders for $140 or i can pick up a set of wheel cylinders for $200 from my local Landy mechanic. And i have found a complete set of brake shoes for just $40

Do these prices sound fair? or what ball park should i be looking for? or do you know of any going cheap?

I have also been pricing some suspension parts i will clean up the original leafs and replace the rubbers. I have found these on ebay what do you guys think? again if you know of a cheaper alternative please let me know :)

These will be my first two parts of repair as i plan on working from the ground up :) My next step will be to find the leak in the cooling system and get that sorted out/ then fix up all the rust/then the electrics followed by the aesthetics ie: lick of paint and some panel beating.

Im trying my hardest not to get ahead of myself! but i cant help it, heck i spend everyday dreaming up ways i could afford a new Range Rover Vogue on a casual wage

I look forward to you help! as i hope to get some work done soon...

For the brake cylinders, first of all work out the part numbers you need - not always straightforward, as there are a number of permutations available.

You probably need some combination of 243296, 243297, 243302, 243303, 243743, 273744 for the wheels, and 520849, 564706 or 569339 for the master.

Then try:

Gary at CLR 4WD 4754 2642
Brian at Land Vehicle Spares 4774 1741
Maybe All4x4 seeing you're in Newcastle
Have a look at lrseries.com - they're cheap, but as they're in the UK you need to factor in postage.

Those prices are about the going rate.

If you intend on replacing the suspension bushes, be prepared for a fight! I have had success with melting the rubber out with oxy or a blowtorch, and then pressing out the centre or drifting it out. Cut the outer shell with a hacksaw and then after a bit of heating and a lot of WD40 it should belt out!

The ones on eBay I assume are from Garry Gjerde (GarryCLR) and if so are quite okay.

There's a drain tap on the left hand side of the block under the manifolds - hiding. ;)

Hey guys just been through some provided links and have come up with the following parts... Am i on the right track? Price seems too good to be true even when i factor in shipping its still cheaper.

SWBKIT1 Brake Overhaul Kit - SWB to 1981 (http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/SERIES/Brakes/Brake_Overhaul_Kit_-_SWB_to_1981.html)

520849 SWB S11/early 11A Brake Master Cylinder (large nut on rear) (http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/SERIES/Brakes/SWB_S11%2Fearly_11A_Brake_Master_Cylinder_%28large _nut_on_rear%29.html)

Thats the right master cylinder, mine cost $75 6 months ago from Gary CLR. Not sure about the rest of it.

Good luck with it mate, great to see another young bloke getting into the Series, I'll be reading this thread with much interest.

Would that brake over haul kit be suited to my 2A? :)

As for the comment on young ones getting into the series landys all i can say is you should always respect your elders :)

Maybe probably. Pull the wheels and drums off, and have a look at what's there. You may find you've got 11" drums on the front, not 10", or some such modification.

Unfortunately things have been slow with Christmas and New Years etc. I have done my searching and decided best to buy the master Cylinder from ALL4X4 in Newcastle for $50... And i will be getting the brake overhaul kit shipped in from the UK. The Kit includes all shoes required and a slave cylinder for each wheel plus a couple other bits and bobs. The kit costs $70 (after exchange) plus the freight will be added to that. However i have emailed them on multiple occasions to find out the shipping costs and times and am yet to get a response. Does anyone on here have any idea on freight costs from them guys.

So after waiting a very long time for a response i was lucky enough to receive and email today stating that the product is correct for me which i already knew thanks to you guys! but there was still no mention of postage costs and time *sigh* I have sent one back requesting this information... fingers crossed it wont be too long before i know the costs so i can buy it and getting the old girl... stopping again :)

After waiting a very long time for an email i am happy to say the landed price for:
4 Slave Cylinders, all the brake shoes required and a few springs and washers

will come to roughly $185 Landed... most of this cost in fact $115 of that is simply to get it to my door step :) so that with the added cost of $50 for the master Cylinder means to fix the brakes it will cost me roughly $235 which i must say is much MUCH cheaper then i had thought it would be!

James.

Not much of an update...

I have scored myself a bulk head which has a rust free internal dash...(not sure on what to call it) which has been rusted out on mine. So i will simply **** mine out and replace it with the good one. And after a closer inspection the chassis is all fine except for the rear cross member.

And the foot wells will need replacing as they are shot. After the close look i have decided on stripping all the panel work off to make it easier to clean the chassis up and re do all the brakes and lines. We are buying two shipping containers so i will be using one of those as my "shed" to work on the little beast but i will have to wait to get the containers sorted out now.

I have also discovered it is a 62 model so i hope to have it on the road by its 50th birthday :)
