I have a slight oil leak from around the oil seal on the rear hub of my Defender 300 tdi. I think that a speedy seal might be the way to go but I don't know the diameter required. Does anyone know the diameter of the stub axle tube where the hub seal runs? Thanks. Jim

Jim,
I would suggest if the seal surface isn't real flash to replace the stub. The reason I say this is that a speedy sleeve STILL requires a reasonable backing to work correctly, AND sometimes the surface can be that bad the speedy sleeve will STILL allow weeping past it, then the brake pads need cleaning/ replacing Again, the whole lot apart bla bla bla.
I gave up on sleeves many years ago, only like doing jobs once.
If there is only a small amount of damage / wear to the surface then should be OK, OR if grooved, then try another seal position? Are you using RTC3511 double lip seals?

You may be able to position a new seal on a different section of the shaft. If not, just stick the vernier calipers on the shaft and give the measurments to a bearing place to match up a speedy sleeve.

Hi Justinc. I wondered about that myself. How difficult is it to replace the hub? Jim

Jim,
Defender with disc brake rear (Non ABS) Stub assembly is part number FTC1740. It is very easy to fit. Hub and disc off, 6 bolts and you are off:)
If modifying hubs to run in diff oil, flick the seal out of the inner side of the stub axle. this will allow diff oil into hub to lube wheel brgs and drive flanges. MUST use RTC3511 double lipped seal if doing this.
