Hi All,
I finally decided to take out the pistons and rods after doing valve stem seals failed to fix the blue smoke blowing and irregular miss. OK so now the drama is with the pistons, when I pulled them out no. 1 (front) had a broken ring which I was happy with because in my ignorance I was thinking, "great, new rings job done"!!
Problem 1, the rings have an allowable side gap of .06 to .011mm, the top ones are by far the worst, mine range from .33 to .66. According to the local engine re-builders thats throw away material.:o
So seeing as I don't have the budget for a re-bore etc I am thinking options. The bores all seem quite good, no scoring and I have not done it before (measured bore with inside micrometre) but they seem very close to the orginal spec of 90.488mm. What happens if I throw in a new set of standard pistons and rings (about $500) and conrod bearings.:(
Problem 2. Pistons 2,3 and 4 have what looks like melt/heat effects on the side where the injectors are right at the bottom of the V, whats doing this as it is pretty bad in a couple of them.
I do have another running diesel I have just acquired in a rusty series 3 lwb, so another option is to swap that in but it is an unknown quantity.
Sorry for the long story, any advice would be appreciated.
Russell.
