Hi guys, got a question for you all. On the defender apparantely there are 2 diffent manual boxes, the LT77 5 speed and the R380 5 speed (same as the Discos).

My questions are, can any one confirm the actual ratios of the transfer case and also the differences between the two boxes, by either appearance or serials etc.

Thanks guys.

Just to refresh your memory, the transfer and main gearboxes are seperate. Up to March 'ish 94, Landrover issued the LT77, with reverse up and to the left. After that time, the R380 came out, with reverse down and to the right. The overall design of the transfer case (LT230) didn't change, but a defender's high range was 1.4:1, whilst the Disco & RR got 1.2:1. There should be a sticker somewhere that says what ratio the LT230 is, or there are various web sites with the explanation of the prefixes and suffixes of the serial numbers. ( The ratios can be changed - after all it's only a gearset)

Langy, yeah I was aware that obviously the box and transfer case were seperate, what I am looking at present is putting a defender TC into a disco, as you have already probably gathered.

Weighing up options of either a 4.11 R&P swap, a TC high range ratio conversion or finding a defender TC from the wreckers. I think it will just all come down to price.....

Very helpful site that link was, cheers.

If you fitted a 1.4 transfer and 4.11 centres it would scream it's head off, even just fitting a 1.4T/C with standard disco wheels/tyres you are very undergeared. What are you trying to achieve?. Pat

Fitting 4.11's is far more costly than changing to a defender high range transfer ratio (1.410:1), which is roughly 20% lower than Disco (1.222:1).
BUT, if you are running anything over a 33" tyre, and you have a Tdi, (especially with an auto behind it), then do the 4.11's. You will have far better engine braking in low range and better crawl ratios. Your High range will be a bit lower on the highway, but who's in a hurry anyway???

Mate, have just swapped over to 265/75/16s and have lost a bit of power, I want to fix the gearing up to so she runs doesnt struggle through life as much. I am leaning towards the TC now and not really worried about the RP any longer, just due to the cost involved. Another point was brought to my attention, which was uping the powr by way of upgraded intercooler with a fuel tweak and it will more than likely suffice.

Thoughts?

LT230 ratios are same (1.410:1 hi) for all 110's except 2.5/2.25l petrol and N/A diesel (1.667:1 hi).
