Where to buy a tow electrical adaptor?

I discovered this afternoon - right when I was about to hitch up a trailer to my Disco - that the round electrical socket on the Disco is a lot bigger than the smaller plugs/sockets on my Dad's box trailer and boat trailer.

Does anyone know where I could buy an adaptor cable to enable me to plug a smaller Australian style round trailer cable into the Disco?

Both of what you have are in use in Aus. and have been for some years.

Unfortuneatly, the smaller comes in both 5 circuits plus earth, and six circuits plus earth. The current rating is usually only sufficient for lesser loads. Battery charging current is usually too much.

The larger can be wired in two ways, depending on whether it is a five pin trailer plug, or a seven pin van plug being inserted - confusion.

If you are considering towing a van or camper-trailer, consider upgrading, to a seven pin "flat" for normal feeds, plus Anderson socket for the battery charge circuit as a separate cable. All circuits catered for and no confusion when going from lightweight trailer to c'van to boat to camper trailer.

As for adaptors, yes they are available from most auto electrical outlets. Autobarn, Supercheap, Kmart, some garages/s.station shops. The trouble is -which one.

It could be easier to wire your own, if you can get the necessary bits. Just use auto wire, keep it neat, tape it all - or use the 5 core cable. The trick is to know which pin does what on the two ends.

Write all the details down before you start wiring up. For that you will need to open up both the car socket and the trailer plug to verify.

With a readymade adaptor there is still the possibility of it all going awry if either the tow car or the trailer is non-standard.

I bought one today to go from the D4's round 7 to the flat 7 that everything else here uses, and it works too!
