Mrs Santa gave me the go-ahead so I've ordered a Canon 500D + EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens from DWI.
I settled on this lens as a good all-rounder. The reviews were reasonable and its within my budget. What I'm saving will go towards a good landscape lens some time in the near future.
Wasn't after the video functionality but there was only $100 between the 500D and 450D so I thought I'd like the extra pixels and processing capability.
Now the wait:(

I'm sure you'll enjoy the new toy.

Canon's are just to inaccurate due to the lack of rifling:p

It arrived this morning, so that's 6 days from order to delivery via Fedex from HK.:banana::banana:
Both the camera and lens look the genuine article although I suspect the camera was bound for the Canadian market as it's mentioned on the serial number plate, and the charger lead has a nth American plug (an adaptor was in the box).

Congrats! Nothing like a new toy to start the day.
Whereas I had to make do with a text message that mine has been delayed.

Who was the vendor?

Mine is the official distributor who must remain unnamed ... I am getting a good discount so cannot complain about a one-day delay. Hope it's just one day ... supposed to be in my hands just about now.

The old-school strap is from my FE2, circa 1986
Still waiting to play, though

Very nice! Set the Auto ISO at 200 - 10,000 and 1/100 and have fun.
Is that the 50 f/1.4G I can see? I've got it's predecessor the "D" series, its 21 years old and works really well on the new body. Didn't like it on the D200 as it was rather soft.
I know why you didn't use the D3s strap supplied. I think Nikon supplies the cheapest strap it can with the camera:mad: Yesterday I ordered a LowePro Voyager-C strap though so will see how good that is.
I'm still awaiting my 2nd battery (and cover) it's on back order from Nikon AU for a month now:mad:

I'm chuffed :D
Still going through manual, can't wait to get snapping.
Why do you need another cover for the second battery, doesn't it use the same one?

Congrats on all the new toys gentlemen, expecting big things and great results for 2010!! :D:D
Got my 7D in November, only taken 50 shots (testing, firmware upgrade confirmation) I'm still waiting for my new custom waterhousing to be finished. :(
Hopefully end of february, the body is the cheap piece in the "puzzle" by the way :(

I like very much the canon glass and I not have considered the Canon cameras because they have a lot of problems when they come with a new model :(
That is one of the reasons why they lost the pro market on the last Olympic games.
Looks like that they did not have learned the lesson :(
Sony will keep the 2 big players very honest in the near future and Canon have to be very careful.

Yes, but easier to swap over if the batteries ready to go, so less of a potential dust or moisture problem.

Ah, I see it now ... makes sense. Think I might get one later, will see how often I actually need to swap batteries since claimed life of 4,000 shots is very very long. Even half of that is a lot since I don't recall ever shooting 2,000 shots in between visits to a power socket.

The estimated life is approx 500 - 5000 shots depending on what you do. I took about 600 the other weekend playing around at 9fps and also about 2min of video. Lots of chimping and playing around with settings. As for the effect on the battery ... about 20%:)
After the D200 which would be flat battery by 500 shots (if I was careful) the D3s is amazing.

I've heard of people selling their cameras after 1,500 clicks ... so a D3s might not even have gone through a battery recharge yet. Kind of like selling your car when your first tankful of fuel is down to a quarter.

PSi, watch out for dust bunnies. They aren't joking when they say the D3/D700/D3x/D3s sensor attracts dust:mad: So far having the "clean on startup" set seems to be OK, but I found I had to set this when I'm going to be changing lenses out doors.

Thanks for the heads-up, will be extra careful. Have not been in dusty areas with it yet.
Had a few dots in my D700 after just a couple of weeks, even when I thought I had been careful. Even sending it to Nikon for a (free) clean up did not remove all of them, just moved some of them around.
