Hi
I wonder if any of you lot can help me.

My air con in my 1998 Defender 300Tdi was working great , in fact brill until yesterday when i stopped the car out side a shop then went in and came back out to drive of and the aircon was not working at all. Nothing happens when you turn the fan dial. I think it is the fan rather than the air con.

But I have checked the fuse but need a bit of clarification on which fuse are which and if i have missed any. Checked the ones in front of the gear stick , the four uinder the bonnet and the ones in the battery try

Also do these fans just go with out warning . Seems a bit sudden for it all to just pack up

Or can someone recomend a good place to fix it on the Brisbane Southside

Cheers

Ali

try a few of these

1. switch the system on with the engine not running. Wiggle/remove the relays and plugs in the compartment under the pax seat to determine which relay turns each bit on and off.
2. buy some electrical cleaner and clean all the plugs and sockets for verdigrease.
3. check you have power to the fan clutch when the system turns on and off using the temp switch
4. check all the fuses in the various locations in pax compartment and batterybay. Use a multimeter don't just look at them. spray all fuses with contact cleaner when re assembling.
5. if you do manage to get it goint check the sight glasses on the receiver dryer for bubbles.

if all else fails talk to the guys in redcliffe.

Read yesterday of a fuse for the lower fan speeds, does the fastest seting work?(Rave Disco2,might be the same).

Ok after checking all the fuses and the relays. Still not found the reason it does not work. There is no clicking coming from the relays when you swtich the fan AC on and off. But there is power going to the fan as i unpluged the plug to the fan and then put a multi meter on it and turned the dial on the AC and it showed power coming though.

Know a far bit about landies but being a pom this is my first defender with AC and don't know anything about AC on the defenders. So a bit lost really

Anymore surgesting of where i shoud check

Cheers

Ok panic over

Started taping things with the end of the racket and found one of the relays in the battery box to be the problem

Thanks for all your help

Same thing happened to me about 6 months ago, found out the black regulator in the battery bay under passenger seat is where the problem is, after a lot of fiddling with the wire plug that fits into the top, approx 6 wires from memory, was not connecting properly, i jiggled it a couple of times and hey presto aircon works. I think it needs the plug with the wires in it replacing as they get a bit stretched and dont want to connect properly, mine had a burn mark on the plastic where the red wire enters the plug.
give it a go.
if i remember tomorrow i will post up a couple of pics for you.

Here are a couple of pics if anyone is interested, also there is a temperature control on the bottom of this unit when taken off it can be adjusted for cooler or warmer.

as i was returning home from a bit of an off road trip this afternoon, we pulled in to fuel up, when i got back in and started her up, no air con. exact same symptoms as original poster has.
thanks for this post! i'll get into that battery box in the morning and have a tinker with that little black box!
cheers

well, looks like i've got bigger problems...
here's what i've got in my battery box...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

as you can see, no black box like philco's...
of the 4 fuses there in that fuse holder, only one is wired up to anything...
and it's now melted...

i've given the relay beside the fuses a wiggle while the ignition is on, and fan switch on, but no responses from the fan.

of the wires going into that fuse, one went straight to + on the battery, and the other go's into the wiring loom...

anyone got any knowledge of this set up?

it's a 93 200tdi deefer 110

I don't think this is the air con controls or Fuses.

according to the manual On a 200 TDi the fuese and relays for the AIr con are under the bonnett in front of the Fan unit on the passnger side (near the turbo area)

my 93 200tdi deefer 110 has no fuse box under the bonnet.
the one fuse that is connected in the 4 fuse box under my pax seat is for the a/c fan!
i clipped the wires and held them together, and viola! fan works.
so i soldered in a new in-line fuse holder and put a new 20A fuse into it.

did a couple hours of driving and she's running fine again!
