View Full Version : What is this noise?

OK can anyone tell me what this noise from my Puma is?

YouTube- Strange Engine Noise

Here are the symptoms:

It always gives 5 distinct clonks after the engine stops
If you immediatly turn the ignition ON again at time of stopping it doesn't do it. This would suggest it is electronic.
It does occassionaly give one of clonk noise when running (this is heard on the video at about 40sec mark)
There is no noticable problem with the engine, turbo etc.
There are no fault codes (DTC's) logged.
It's been like this now for over three months and is "somewhat" annoying.

I'm wondering if it is the waste gate but it appears to be coming from the passenger's side rear of the engine (possibly from the area shown in the first part of the video).

Derek, I'm not sure but it may be an EGR valve self clean or something like that, can't hear it on this PC and I'm not even sure the Puma has one, but could be something similar.

Thanks Justin, I'm sure the Puma doesn't have a PC like yours:p

Yes EGR is another possibility. I'm hoping someone else has actually encountered this.

Already done. I'm hoping Pete or someone has encountered this.

As for the cleaning, most of that red dirt won't come off :(

the tdv8 makes that sound to , im not 100% certen what it is but its soming to do with the egr sys, or the vnt on the turbo,, it self tests after the engine stops,

but what ever it is,, that is way way to loud, and sounds dry and needs lube atleast and probs replacment

I can tell you now ours doesn't sound like that AT ALL

Ian said he would take a wild guess at the ABS pump.....he reckons he has heard that noise on ours but it was very very quite nothing like you have (i cant say I have heard it at all and I drive the car the most)

but it has a kind of rubbery sound to it

dmdigital

Don't think it's the ABS pump sound is coming from a different location to the pump.

Yes, your's would sound almost like a new one:p

Hi Derek, sounds like the EGR doing it's cleaning cycle. My 110 has always made that noise, well nearly always, it stopped late last year and the MIL light came on so LR replaced the EGR valve and the noise came back.
Your one does sound quite loud, but I've never listened to my one physically that close. I can hear my one faintly whilst in the cab with the windows up.

I'd looked and looked through the manuals and couldn't find anything. Must have been too obvious (or as my wife says: "I had a Derek look")

:D I know what you mean, I remembered seeing it somewhere and had to read that paragraph about 4 times before I saw it!

It's the noise mine makes after I turn it off...

It's good to know I'm not the only one:)

The other two Puma's in town don't make this noise, but then thy have less mileage as well.

Mine makes the same noise also, though not as loud. Read on Def2 that it was a sign that your clutch was on it's way out. EGR system sounds like a better reason.

Sounds like it Derek, Some euro turbo diesel small cars have it, thats where I have heard it before, but until now didn't realise the Puma does, but after all it IS a Ford Europe engine...

I think mine does that when I turn it off too. It is an '07.

Have not tried listening with the bonnet up, but similar (if softer) noise from mine too.

Perhaps I should have also mentioned you can hear it from over 10 metres away with the bonnet closed.

Mine has done it from day one, but again, not nearly as loud and scratchy sounding.

I think the clonk noise at the 40 sec mark is ABS pump related as it occurs shortly after the car is restarted. Mine makes a similiar sound to that at start up.

Gee that shutdown noise is strange!! I like the EGR self cleaning theory.

Can you blank out the EGR easily in a Puna?

dullbird

ok so listened today...ours does do it but very very quietly, you can hear it next to the bonnet but you cant hear it from inside the car at all, which is probably why I haven't heard it until now

not easily no...well not at this point in time but people are working on it...

blanking it off makes the MIL light illuminate.. but partially blanking it off seems to work better but still shows up some codes I believe. I haven't personally done it but plenty have in the UK if you read Defender2

Thanks for that feedback Lou - I suspect from the other replies I've had that is how it's supposed to be. I'm glad you've confirmed it.

I'm thinking the EGR is a little worse for wear. Probably won't get looked at until July though when I next get near a dealers for the annual anti-corrosion inspection.

If I depress the clutch pedal while turning the vehicle off there are no sounds what so ever.Give it a try.

My money's on the EGR. My 09 has made that sound since new - but not as loud though .

Workshop manual says this is normal as the valve needs to rid itself of potential deposits. Mine is the same and I was concerned when I first heard it as I can't recall hearing it before, but then it was late at night, with windows down and no ambient noise. Will bring it up at my next visit to Trivett Motors in Parramatta who are apparently going to install my rear window wiper and washer as Sollihull forgot to install it.

My parents 2010 does the same thing, not always, more often after short trips. Rarely after longer trips, just consider it normal.

Hi Derek

My Puma started making exactly the same noise just before 40,000km last November so I drew attention to it at the 40,00km service in November.
The service records states "egr valve noisy" but when I picked the car up they said that a new egr valve needed to be ordered and that they would ring me in a couple of weeks when it came in. I drove to Sydney and back the next month and when I contacted the dealer in January to find out out why it was taking so long to get the part, I was told that there had been a "revision" of the part which had caused a delay in getting it. I booked it in for replacement as soon as the part arrived on the 25th January, but when I picked up the car at the end of the day I was told that the egr valve "was within parameters" and did not need replacing. They apologised for stuffing me around and said that many Pumas had had the valve replaced but when the faulty ones were disassembled they were apparently found not to be faulty. Consequently dealers were given a new set of rules on replacing them since November. After my trip to Sydney it had quietened down a lot and no longer sounded like yours does, so at the time it sounded reasonable. However it is now back to being as noisy as yours is and last month at 50,000km when it was back in the dealers again for a service and some warranty fixes, it is apparently still "within parameters".

Never made a sound for over 35,000km... but I am told it is a normal part of the valve's self cleaning process.

It is hard enough as it is convincing anyone that the Puma is actually a current model vehicle and now, after pulling up, switching off and getting strange looks as this death rattle comes out of the engine bay I wouldn't even bother telling family members that the car is less than 2 years old!!

The car works fine but I'd call it "somewhat embarassing" rather than "annoying".

Cheers
Mark

Yep, ours does the same. I just figured it was a Puma thing. As mentioned previously, the noise is more apparent when the engine turned off when still cold.

Hi Guys - Im a long time reader here but this is the first post. So - g'day.

Has there been any further development or thoghts on this noise. Our 130 started making this noise suddenly at 40,000km. Prior to that it was quiet and I certainly couldnt hear it.

Seems odd that a noise that 'suddenly' appears is OK.

SteveL
