Hi Guys,

I recently heard Mr Clarkson on topgear say LR never made a range rover 3.5lt with FI. Only with carbs?

Anyway - I was thinking I might have the chance to put in a bigger engine then the 3.5lt have? (Maybe 3.9lt due to FI?)

I am keen on a happy medium of having power :D with out over kill. IE: 3.5lt works with the RRC, but something a little bigger 4.1 perhaps? would not care about crusing the RRC and having power in reserve for off-road.

Thoughts? Do I have this all muddled up ? :)

Cheers

3.5 was definately available with EFI - I had one. It is now repowered with a 3.9 EFI from a Discovery.

My intention is to rebuild the 3.5 into a 4.2/3 using a stroker crank.

4.6 conversions are quite popular as well.

It used to be common to fit Holden 5.0 engines and there is at least one or two Holden 5.7 (355 stroker) converted Rangies out there. There are also Ford 5 litre ones, Chrysler 360 ones, diesels, basically you name it and it has been done!

loads of 3.5 efi's left the factory.

Some sort of capactiy increase with the Rover engine would be the easiest.

I just checked out the Top Gear Bolivia episode.

Clarkson said he had a 3.9 injected and opened the bonnet. The motor presented with twin carbies then Hammond and Mmay pointed this out and highlighted that it must infact be a 3.5.

Nah, I'm pretty sure EFI was introduced on the 3.5's in some time around 1990 (Aus never had 3.5 carbie Discos due to emissions AFAIK) and when the 3.9's followed in about 1994??? they still came with EFI.

Ah :) thanks for clearing that up. I thought Jez was saying it had to be a 3.9 as they didn't do efi for 3.5 only carbs... which made me question what I know about the rangie hehe had to ask.

mmmm, back to ringing around places to get my rangie going hehehe :D

My RRC is 10/87 build, it rolled out of the factory as a 3.5 with flapper EFI. You are correct about Discoverys never having carbs in Australia. They were originally 3.5, then 3.9, but always with hotwire injection.

That's what they're trying to do:D

3.5 EFI from 86
3.9 from 90

Disco

3.5 till 94
3.9 from 94

Variances in the dates, but rough enough

Or a Chev, costs about the same to run with LPG. Audio preferences come into play.

Really smart people buy with Chev and gas, or Isuzu already fitted. :)

G'day Folks :)

Going by my book, "Range Rover the first generation" by James Taylor,
October 1985 (86 model year) EFI introduced on Vogue model,(Hi-line in Aust) it also brought in the short stick LT77 and the 4 spd ZF4HP22 auto.
It also was the first of the welded body frames replacing the bolt together type.

April 86: was the first of the Turbo D 2.4 VM diesel

November 86: EFI 3.5ltr fitted as standard on 4 door models

Hope that is of help

cheers
