I am looking into this beauty because with time I would like to get into avian and wild life photography including clips with sound.
There are 2 cameras suitable for this and they are the Nikon D300s and the Canon 5D.
Perhaps the Canon have a better sound but the quality of the images and the body of the D300s are awesome.
The only problem (in the future) is the cost of the Nikon glass but at this stage with my inventory of lens will cost more to change the brand.
Dreaming with the Nikon 500mm  but the 300 with a 1.4 converter looks like to be next :)

I've been talking with an owner of a new 5D MkII and from what I hear it isn't a patch on the Nikon. He's a die hard Canon owner but seems to be getting more disheartened by the Nikon line up at the top end. I was really surprised because I thought that the 5D MkII would have been a great camera. Apparently one of his key complaints is that the seals aren't that much better than his previous 5D. At the level of the D300s/D700/D3s or 7D/5DMkII/EOS1DMkIV it's not just about the pixels.

As for lenses if the rumours amount to anything Nikon may have 4 or 5 new lenses in the first quarter of this year.

I agree with you regarding the quality of the Canon bodies, they have few nasty problems like the mirror come detached from the mounting in the tropics, etc, however I have the chance to see some of the work that Romy Ocon (http://exposureroom.com/members/RomyOcon.aspx/assets/) have done with the beta 5D and now the beta 7D and they are impressive.
You can see some samples of the 5D and the 7D in his blog HERE

I believe that the body and quality control of the nikon is far superior to the canon gear.
I remember when I got my D200 many photographers got the 40D and have lots of problems including software with them. After the first 8 month the cameras were Ok.

I would like to see which new lens will be available from Nikon and the cost of them
A 300mm f/4 VR will be interesting if if going to be under the $3000 :)
