A big Bullshark just recently caught way up the Noosa river.
These have been responsible for attacks in coastal canals.
News this morning, Parks And Wildlife are going to charge the fisherman that caught it. Could be fined thousands.
They dont worry about bycatch in sharknets.

I understand that current theories blame Bull Sharks for most shark attacks/fatalities in rivers / canals / esturies (salt through brackish to fresh)
.... and from now on is the season for such incidents
.... and it is often easy to think that most rule-keepers & law enforcers like to pick the easy marks

I'd say fined for killing in a National Park maybe....and/or is the bullshark a protected species.
If so, fair cop ;)

Sounds like they are experienced shark fishermen and they were trying to catch shark. They should have known the legal size rules. Was the bream they were using as live bait legal size???

Is live bait even still legal?

In QLD live bait is legal as long as the bait is larger than the minimum size limit for that species (if it has one). Fingermark bream have a 35cm size limit, if that was the bait in use it would have to be 35 or bigger...
I wonder how the new 1.5m shark rule will affect the "finners" up north...

by finners you mean Asian fisherman cutting the fins off sharks then butting them back?

I believe it to be fact not a “theory” that bull shark are to blame for shark attacks in the river etc.
They can live in both salt and fresh water making them the perfect river etc... attack weapon.

- many pro netters collect shark fin on the side... not just the blow in indo fishermen.

Well, true. But it is a bit hard to return a berried female after she has a spear through her...
I'm just annoyed my cray (yabbie) traps aren't legal for marron over here :(

Ben,
Spear and release... its just like fillet and release and pink eye salmon only caught between November and February... ;) (this means I am not being serious!)
What I do find particularly amusing is eating at a restuarant on say day 9 of the 10 day coral reef fin fish closure in October and November... and on the menu is "fresh red emporer" and then asking the waiter to choose one of three options:
1/ either it is not red emporer.
2/ or it is not fresh.
3/ or it has been caught and kept in the closure.
good for a laugh before I choose something else!
