There was the Dalai Lama's (brother's) 2a for sale in the US a couple of years back. Perhaps this is another one of his?

Actually, I'm not surprised - Many restored Series 1's go for big money.....

Land Rover Series 1 86 inch Dunsfold for sale, classic cars for sale uk (Car: 79977) (http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-page.php/carno/79977)

This was just one I found rather easily. I feel we here (on AULRO) might actually undervalue some of our pride and joys. ;)

There is one on carsales at the moment http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=7995754&__sid=121732C0A3A5&__Qpb=true&Cr=3&__Ns=pCar_RankSort_Int32|1||pCar_PriceSort_Decimal |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965541% 204294874818&seot=1&tsrc=allcarhome&__Nne=15&trecs=5&silo=1011 (http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=7995754&__sid=121732C0A3A5&__Qpb=true&Cr=3&__Ns=pCar_RankSort_Int32%7C1%7C%7CpCar_PriceSort_D ecimal%7C1%7C%7CpCar_Make_String%7C0%7C%7CpCar_Mod el_String%7C0&keywords=&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965541% 204294874818&seot=1&tsrc=allcarhome&__Nne=15&trecs=5&silo=1011) for $23,000.

It sure looks the good in the photo's, but there is one line in there that I love, "Fully restored, $1000 spent to get to this standard". If I could spend only a grand on restoring one and get $23,000 from selling it, I think its time I contemplate my next career move!!

Yes and no, I think the old saying "they are only worth what someone is willing to pay" holds true on most occasions.

That's a lovely 109":) - and probably cost more than that to build up.
This one has been for sale for a while now - was on ebay a few times and no bids over $10K. Good luck to the owner I hope it sells for that but I doubt it.

The tail lights cost $500 so he obviously budgeted the other $500 well. :lol2:

For 23K, I'd expect more than just a paint job that's not finished. I mean, who in their right mind would leave a car in primer ;).

Many restorers labour under the delusion that what they have spent is value adding. It is not. It is the cost of a hobby. One regularly sees quite common cheap mass produced cars being offered for sale at ridiculous prices usually with the text mentioning the fabulous sum spent restoring them. Classic example was a 1937 Chev. offered for sale at $37,000 and supposedly $25,000 having been spent on the restoration. This was a first class restoration to a standard the manufacturer never intended or could have achieved with the technology of the time. However it is still a cheap mass produced family car of no great technical merit, no competition history, never owned by a celebrity, or taken part in notable events. To my mind, a $7,000 to $10,000 car.

There was an unrestored 1935 Ford, reasonably complete and in need of full restoration offered for sale at Bendigo swap last year for $20,000. I wouldn't pay $10,000 for one freshly restored. It is only an old Ford for Christ's sake. Not vintage, not veteran, not post-vintage thoroughbred, not a listed classic car, just an old car. You could spend another $20,000 restoring this one and still just have an old Ford.

As others have said, restorations are almost always money losing exercises.

I am quite happy throwing rediculous amounts of money at my cars because it is a hobby I am passionate about, and they give me great enjoyment (and will do for years after they are completed) I have no intentions of selling, and no illusions that if I do I will lose bucket loads of money.

I have spent thousands of dollars doing a ground up on Gus, and I haven't even been fussed with using exactly correct parts! If I sold him I would easily lose 60%+ of what I have put into him.

I guess the only answer is to keep him then. :D

I think old Landies are a bit like a homemade motor scooter. My brother made three motor scooters (pretty good too, although I won't tell him that) a few years ago, and thought he would be able to sell them for a few hundred each.

No-one cares these days if someone puts time into something, and people over-value what their time means to someone (whoever wants a car), I think.

Like more than a few times I have seen 'what's my fully sick modded hilux worth' threads on the 4wdAction Hilux Forums. Then they state how much money and time they put into it, thinking it will be worth bloody heaps, even though all it is, is another crappy old toyota ute with some big tyres, spotlights a bull's horns tramp-stamp on the back window.

I would love a good Series 2a, but would not pay that much for one even if I had the money.

Just my thoughts.......

There are some cars I'd pay good money for.. even if everyone else thought that I was insane.

Like one of the first Range Rovers.. you know the one - 1970 2 door, that poo colour, painted steel wheels, rubber mats, manual sick on the floor.. but it would have to be totally original - ie not restored, poked, prodded, modded, touched, or molested in ANY way. Basically a new car, as it ran out of the factory in the first few days of production.

mmm I would /love/ one of them. (just don't tell my 110  )

Red book and others, say they base there values on what the market is offering.

This is a long standing car (and others) sales trick. You have a vehicle (or other) you want to sell at a premium price or consider to be undervalued. If you can push prices up there is going to be more in it for you especially if you have a few more kicking around. So you simply advertise yours at what others might consider to be an over the top price for a period. You do not really care if it sells as what you are doing is creating a impression on the buyers that this is perhaps worth more than they think. After a while you substitute another and do the same for a while. If someone actually pays you have evidence that is what it is worth.
