Hi Guys,
I'm planning on painting up some disco rims for my 110 (once the offset mod is done) and I'm trying to decide on the colour.
Its a white 110 with a black wrap around bull bar with side steps and black chequer plate on the fenders.. so I was thinking about painting them satin black. (and maybe the bar etc at the same time..)
BUT - the other day I saw a hilux with black sunnies on it.. and it looks really dodgy :( maybe black isn't the go! (or, its just the hilux that make it look crap :wasntme: )
Any ideas on a good colour? everything else is black or white so I really don't seem to have much choice...
Anyone got a deefer with black rims that looks good? Pics would be great

Both Barney & IdleTorque have white Disco wheels on their white Defenders with black bars. I think it looks very good.
Another option is the original silver.
Yes I know that it's not a white Defender, but the wheels are silver.:p

lrdef110 - Nice :) Are they flipped, or does it just have a modded offset?
MacFamily - Thankyou :) That looks the business :D:D Black it is. Are they gloss or satin?
Larry - Thanks mate. Are they 33s? Do you have a lift? Any rubbing?

flipped ?
The centre is removed from the rim and the outer flipped and welded back on.
Done to increase offset.

Once flipped do they still fit under the guards of a stock defender?
With the D1 steel wheels does anyone know how much offset is required to get back your turning circle cf 5.5 X 16 standard defender wheels?

What's the off-set mod you're referring to?
Moving the centre of the wheel in towards the car relative the rim. This makes the tyre sit furter away from the car, giving you back your turning circle when they have a larger diameter.
hope that makes sense ;)

Depends on exactly where you weld the centres back on. The first set of D1 rims I had modified are +30mm offset (compared to a stock D1 rim) and flipped.
The second set are +20mm and not flipped - the place that did them machine down the lip on the centre so they don't have to flip them.
the first set have 285s and just rub on the rear where the flares meet the body. The 2nd set don't.

The D1s are 33 if I remember correctly so +20mm would make them 13mm. Is that correct?

Lift? Rear, no. Front, standard 130 HDs.:ehigh5:
Rubbing? Not that I am aware of.

Thanks Guys,
Sounds like 20mm not flipped is the way to go. Will this have any effect on the strengh? I spoke to one place (so far the only place.. the others are all away on holidays..) who said they would only flip them, not just move the offset because of the lip.. and doing it around the lip would weaken them. Is this right or is there a way around it?

they are awesome looking rims and also a VERY awesome looking rig:eek:
if its not a rude question how much did 5 rims cost all up? and is it a legal and easy job to get done?
and if any others have photos of rims (preferably steel) can they be posted up with details please

CHIEF I bought these from a bloke in Brissy with tyres a couple of years ago. Have repainted them since. But I had the centres offset in a set of Disco rims about 6 years ago and they cost about $80 each to do. Would imagine it would be more now though.

c.h.i.e.f it would help if you put your state in your profile so that people could have a stab at answering your questions regarding legality.
The safe (and probable) answer is... doubtful.

Why wouldn't it be legal? Is there anyone that knows for sure? (NSW) also - if it is legal in one state, and ilegal in another, does that mean that you can't drive it in the state that it is ilegal (or is it only that you can't register it there?)
sorry if that is a stupid question.. i think I already know the answer....... :(

flagg I don;t know it's a minefield. Some things like spotties on roof are legal in some states and not legal in other states and they can book you irrespective of what state the vehicle is registered in.

Ok here's my conundrum.

Thanks mate. I'm a bit worried she'll still prefer the white ones.

Come to think of it there was a problem with the white ones paint flak'ng wasn't there ? Didn't show up on the black ones !?

Well - That's the story we'll go with if asked, Ok everyone ?!

I don;t suppose anyone has a really DODGY pic of white dynamic/kings rims on a Defender ?

white spoked wheels look poxy, only LR factory rims go well in white :D Mud, brake dust, road grime and oil leaks blend into the dark rims nicely too

I've seen plenty of white Counties and Defenders with the standard silver D1 rims, and i reckon they suit the colour very nicely.

Nice one Mark :)
I decided for black - and I'm going to go all out and powder coat them too.
Only problem is they are /still/ sitting on shelf at (insert name of only place that does wheel mods in sydney).:mad:
These wretched coopers are disintegrating but I don't want to get my new BFG's until I've got the new rims finished! (can't fit 255/85 on 5.5 rims :( )

G'day Flagg,
I know the place you're talking about. How much did they charge to get the rims offset (if you don't mind me asking)? Why did you choose to offset disco rims over purchasing a set of brand new sunraysias (which i'm guessing would be the same price if not cheaper)? Are the disco wheels stronger than the sunraysias?
Cheers,
Edward :)

Hi Edward
$75. To be honest, I just prefer the look of the disco to the sunnys. If I had thought about it more I would have got some ZU ones from rovacraft but that is a big investment up front (I'm getting 6 done) :)

Fair enough Flagg, i also reckon they look good, especially when offset a little. The ZU rims look good as well, but i don't reckon you can beat steelies for off roading.
Cheers,
Edward :)
