Is there a flow meter to fit top hose to give indication of loss of water. Blown motor to prove it.

It's always a shame to hear about a blown engine. :(

Not a flow meter, but a sensor alarm that lets you know when the water is low is the go.

Sorry to hear about the blown engine...is it just the head or is it seized to the bore?
That top hose is very susceptable to leaking or just busting one day, i think it makes sense to replace it every 2 years or so, because as you have found out it can happen without warning.

As Hendrik says,replace very regularly,the screw and the insert do degrade and can start to leak or blow out in extreme cases.
Mine was 7 years old and I was lucky to catch it just in time.
The hose did not get hard and brittle,but a bit swollen and soft.
The insert basically let go when I tried to remove the bleed screw.

Interestingly my Vehicle just did that hose... :(

I have now been informed from WA that they always put a sensor into that spot to eliminate that silly plastic valve.

Double Ouch...again sorry to hear about your troubles, I know how you feel. Fortunately it is all fixable, you can pick up a good second hand engine for a pretty reasonable price, if you look hard enough.

I was fortunate enough to find the top hose had a soft spot which was bulging prior to a recent trip in Alpine NP, replaced at HiLine 4WD (Traralgon), I am now replacing every coolant hose just to be comfortable......there are soooooo many of the things. :eek:
