If a D3 or D4 gearshift selector needs to be pulled out of park when there's no electrical power, its useful to know that there is an emergency release lever below the left rear of the selector mechanism. The lever is accessed in a D3 by removing the park brake lever, and in a D4 by removing the cup-holders. In each case the small white tab is lifted to release the interlock.

I thought that is where the handbrake release was, if both are there, which is which?

The gearshift interlock release is a small white lever attached to the gear selector assembly that requires a light lift with a finger, whereas the park brake release is a looped cable that requires muscle man to pull using the jack handle with 2 hands, so I'm told.
