I have been told of a wreck of a D2 with complian plate of 02/00. Now there is no way of getting a VN or having a look at the transfer case to see if it has the spigot or not. What are the chances of it having the internals for the diff lock?

You'll have no way of knowing without more info.
The complaince date could be close to the build date (2000 model with no CDL) or it could be 12mths out (1999 with the bits).
If you can get the compliance date, then you can get the VIN as it's on the same plate.

2000 should have the bits in the TC for CDL. Wasn't it deleted late 2001???

From memory, the change over is by transfer case number, not by VIN.
However, if you have the VIN, a dealer can check what the transfer case number will be.
It's like the 10 spline / 24 spline axles in the D1s - the change over was hit and miss for a while.

I have a 99 TD5, where do you get the gear (cable, linkages etc) to operate the CDL?
Will a D1 setup fit?

Ashcroft Transmissions (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/part_17.html) ;)
On this page transfer cases 41D or 42D have internals. Seems all others do not.

When you engage the CDL and then turn on the ignition you will get the TC, HDC and ABS lights on along with the CDL/ 4Wd symbol warning light on.
When it is like this your TC and HDC is disabled and you have a regular 4wd.
If you have the engine already running and Engage CDL you will only get the CDL warning light come on and your TC and HDC will still be enabled. Because the CDL is locked the TC only has to take care of 2 wheels at anytime instead of 4 at anytime. Contrary to some ideas. The TC does not operate in a reduced capacity with the CDL engaged.
I am not a fan of snipping wires. Simply because you no longer have a warning about the CDL being engaged and run the risk of forgetting (paricularly if others drive your vehicle) and stuffing Transfers etc.
Motor on or off When you engage the CDL will determine your TC capabilities.
