Buying a Vehicle from an interstate dealer

Hi Guys,

A quick question.....
I am looking to purchase a vehicle for work - and have found a few in NSW that i would be keen to have a look at. I live in vic, so the car would need to be transferd to Vic.

When i buy the car from NSW, i they will reg it and pay stamp duty for NSW.
When i transfer the vehicle from the dealer to Vic reg, do i need to pay the vehicle duty?

You only pay stamp duty once.

Either it will be regoed in the state you buy it (in which case you pay stamp duty there) or you get a permit to drive and rego it in your state (in which case you pay stamp duty there).

If it is regoed in your name in the other state, then when you transfer the rego to your own state there is no stamp duty payable because you already own the vehicle.

Early last year I bought a vehicle from NSW. You won't be able to register it in NSW unless you have an address in NSW. I wasn't even able to get a permit. What the registration authority told me was I needed a pink slip and a NSW address to get a permit so I engaged carriers to transport it. I would advise you to give the NSW regitration authority a call and confirm this.
If you are registering the vehicle in Vic., previous registration slips are useful even if they are not in your name.

When I purchased (private sale) my D2 in NSW the registration authority in NSW was notified of the change of owner via the standard process of sending in the rego papers by the previous owner. I took my part of the rego certificate, got insurance over the phone from RACV, drove the car down to Vic, got a roadworthy certificate, took it to the RTA (appointment required) they checked the numbers on the vehicle, ticked the necessary box and then I paid for new rego and stamp duty. It was up to me to send back to NSW if I wanted to cash out the remaining rego in NSW.

Last year I went to Sydney with a mate to look at vehicles for him. He ended up buying a Landcruiser from a dealer (second hand car). They included rego in the deal and got it inspected and registered in NSW for him. We then drove it back to SA where he got the rego transferred to SA. I am not sure if the car was regoed in his name in NSW or the dealers name, but it certainly had NSW plates on it when we drove it back to SA.

I bought a Disco from the Gold Coast a few years ago and exchanged/signed papers, phoned the insurance company and drove home to NSW. Took the papers into RTA a couple of days later and it was a bit convoluted but not too bad. Paid stamp duty as normal and then we got a letter from the Queensland mob asking us to verify that we'd registered in NSW.
