S111 1/4 Tank empty why?

What can be done to enable a series vehicle to drive on even after its fuel gauge reads 1/4 tank. Is it a tank design flaw or is it the gauges fault.

usually its the sender or a bad earth conection.

the easy answer is to put more fuel in the tank.

Heh I got caught with this just yesterday....ran out of fuel about 5km from home. :angel:

nope....

about 30% of the time going to the effort of cleaning all the connectors and earths will sort it tho.

So the tank is actually empty its just the gauge thats faulty. My Landy has a elect fuel pump fitted but struggles to build pressure any ideas its fitted close to the tank as recommended

no the tank may not be empty the suction line may not go all the way down or it might have a hole in it.

The pump or filter may be knackered.

take the seat out take the access panel off unscrew the sender and lift it out then have a look at whats in the bottom.

most times the electric pump will draw down to about the last 1/4 inch (6mm) of fuel out of the tank.

You may find that the arm for the float on the tank sender has been bent at some time. You need to remove the sender unit from the tank and check that the float arm has the appropriate bends in it. It it isn't at full down travel when the float on on the bottom of the tank you have found your problem. Adjust the arm so that it is at it's bottom position when there is still some fuel in the tank (not just the bit that you can't pump out). That way you have a reserve when the tank reads empty.

Once adjusted you will have a guage that reads accurately when it is most important. Who cares what it reads when it is full?

It seems this will be easier to fix than the VW golf I once owned I had to drive that one on odo meter could never get the gauge to work. But then again we are talking about the BEST OF THE BEST4*4*FAR:D

Just fitted a long range to the SIII 88 before xmas. Gauge doesn't work at all and speedo has been out for a while. I usually give it a rock while standing in gear and listen for the fuel to slosh back and forth and make a range assessment based on that. :o :)

remember the purpose of the fuel sender is to tell lies to the fuel gauge.

FIL had a piece of dowel with notches marked on it sitting behind the drivers seat.

The tanks had dents protruding out of them at the bottom for the stick to get sat into.

That was the most accurate fuel gauge I ever saw
