My 300tdi has decided to stop running. Went through a round about and then nothing. Wont start. Traced the fuel to the fuel pump, and I have fuel entering the fuel pump but nothing coming out the other end (checked this by taking the hard line off the back of the pump)... So my theory is that I have snapped a timing belt... Is there any other reason beside the timing belt and the electronic fuel stop on the back that would prevent fuel from getting through?

:(:(

Thanks in advance

Take the oil filler cap off and get someone to crank the engine, you should see the rockers moving if they aren't , you have a broken timing belt.

Been thru that on my D1, just dont keep cranking the car any longer than you need to..Hope its something else..

From memory they have a fuse on the 300 tdi fuel system, could be worth a look..

Good luck Cheers Ean

Make sure it's not simply the fuel cut-off solenoid that's stuck.

isn't there a spade connector on them that corodes also and prevents the fuel getting pumped or something

Long and the short I was going to check that just as I had to come home.. Will be back out in a sec to check it.

As for the fuel cut off solenoid... I was trying to get the plastic cap off the thing but I couldnt with out breaking the cover. So will check this when I head back out as I shall take a screw driver.

It seems your injector pump has fallen out on your driveway from what I can gather by your photo and it looks like a drill bit has lodged itself in one end.

Remove drillbit and re install pump.... :D:p

hehe!

But seriously, remove the rocker cover and injectors before cranking. If the timing belt has broken, there will be valves in an open position and turning it over will mash valves and pistons together doing all sorts of damage to conrods also.
Best thing is to turn crank slowly with a spanner or socket and see if cam turns, just don't use starter.
If this is ok, then it may well be a fuelling issue. PM Justinc and he should be able to give you a few good pointers on the pump.

Cheers

Andrew

ah think you might be looking at the fuse box or something?

the fuel cut off solenoid is on the back of the injector pump. it's kind of hard to see, have to sort get your head in the engine bay, upside down looking at the backside of the injector pump. it's the only wire running to it, goes to a spade terminal.

definitely check it out. a round-a-bout, especially if you hit the ripple strip (aka the roundabout :P) would be just the kind of jolt to shake a corroded wire loose.

i suffered the same thing a few months ago, went to pull the plug off and the wire fell straight off! crimped on a new terminal and hey presto! :D

No the plastic cap that goes over the spade terminal

Come to think of it, if you want to check for broken cambelt and do not want to either pull off the cover or crank the engine is to poke something through the drain hole and wiggle a bit. A broken cambelt will most likely leave some debris (don't ask how I know). If you can't scratch off more than a bit of dust it should be okay.
As said, my first port of call would be the solenoid. Good luck, mate!

No need for that on a 300tdi. The rocker arms & pushrods are made of cheese.

Cam is turning.. :)

Just going to get some connectors for the fuel solenoid. Ummm, As for the solenoid being at the back of the pump underneath??? My stop solenoid is at the back of the pump at the top of the fuel pump.. Very easy to get too. But I think that this is my best bet.

The big old girl is back up and running. It was the solenoid wire. Cheers for all the help guys and gals!!!

On the Tdi the pushrods and rockers are designed to fail if the cam belt breaks, the valves come straight down over the pistons so they cannot bend,I had a timing belt run off the pulleys on mine, the brand new tensioner failed at 110k's/hr and two pushrods and one rocker snapped, that was 6 or 7 years ago and it has never had an issue since. The fuel shut off wire is always the very first thing you check if a Tdi won't start. Gday Pat,

Had a new belt that had done about 1200km break on my 97 tdi and you can straighten the push rods if needed but it done a turbo and broke 2 of the rocker adjusting screws within 500ks of repairing the broken belt.

The turbo managed to get me the 1500ks i had left to travel and a couple of adjusters from a early falcon worked, but as you say the valves excaped any damage..

I was told its designed that way for the army but not to sure about that.

Cheers Ean
