Hi All, I'm looking at fitting a winch to my D2 with ARB winch bar,
Can anyone recommend one? Steel/rope? Im not a hard core 4wd'er just something to get me out of trouble when i need it.

what ever you buy, you want 9000lbs min pull for a D2

Money no option, used a lot, Warn XD9000

Money an option, there for peace of mind T-max 9500, or superwinch EP9

Cheaper still a "chinese" winch from ebay, 9000 lbs, pretty much identical to a T-max

I favour the synthetic rope for 4 reasons, a BIG weight saving , stronger, can be "spliced" in the field and not as dangerous in a failure

I understand the Tigerz11 ones are good too.

rope preferably, but if not used regularly go steel as it is unaffected by the sun.

The Warn XD9000 is fine but if you do go that option then consider the Warn 9.5 XDC. It's about the same price, has a higher capacity and more importantly has a solid state switch box and a thermal cut out.

I agree with the synthetic rope - just the safety aspect alone is a big plus. If you do get synthetic get an aluminium hawse fairlead as well. Good place to buy from is okoffroad.com (USA) especially the way the AU$ is at present.

Also make sure you have heavier springs in the front than standard.

Personally I reckon Warns are over rated and way too expensive, do yourself a favour and get an X9 Superwinch.

That's what I have and it has been brilliant.

Toyota use them as there factory fitted winch;)

i have a xdc9500 and it is awesome it has a steel rope but i think once its done i will move to plasma rope as it get used a fair bit not much on me but others

In the middle of the same decision- I've come down to two, the Tigerz11 and the Warn XD9000. I reckon I will go the Tigerz11 for the following reasons: $700-$1100 cheaper than Warn, (Tigerz $840), it comes with synthetic rope that's safer to use, weighs 13kg less, has a more powerful motor and load rating (12000lb vs 9000 for the Warn), draws less power to winch the same load, can be used for reverse winching, apparently the Warn can not, and by all accounts seems to be a solid, well sealed unit with the right features (heavy duty solenoid, cut off switch, etc.) It has the same 3 year warranty and seems to have enough support for parts/servicing. Check it out on ebay

Having said all that, it's not going to be in regular use- more likely the occasional recovery. The Warn is no doubt a better quality unit, it's a question of will the chines one do the job? Seems like it will. having spent 2k on the bar I gotta save some $ somewhere :eek:

If you're only wanting something to get you out of trouble... Get a Turfor.

Mount an electric winch on the front & it can only pull you forwards (further into what you've just gotten stuck in).

You might want to do a search as there has been plenty of discussion on this subject.

Surely the money no option choice would be the 9.5 XP.

6HP as opposed to 4.6

The XDC is too comlicated with the thermal cut out and can take for ever to recover stuff.

LR used to supply (may still do) the XD9000 as the genuine winch. Thats what was on my car from the factory.

When working in the cape saw alot of problems caused by bullbar mounted winches--even on the 6wheeler tourers--turfor mounted to correct towing[pulling] points manual control [no dickie electrics] seemed to be the better option--even better -snatch strap from that 4WD following:p

I have Warn on both Defenders and a Tirfor. Won't sell the Tirfor, been way to useful over the years.

i now have been on the end of a turfer 1 to many times, 2 hrs to go 10 foot up hill in that dust/shale/ pebble stuff. the cer moved 1 foot left and that was it , A tree behind me...Inch by inch by inch. Love a winch now. Never throw the turfer out.

It is a TIRFOR wire rope hand winch made by Tractel. It is also well and truly copied by other manufacturers. Mine is a genuine T16 I picked up second hand.


It is not a turfer, who I assume would be someone who turfs.

The original Tirfor copies were "Anchor" and "Elephant Looper". I have an Anchor I bought 2nd hand, a mate has an EL.

A pain to use, but extremely handy to have.

You'll only ever use a Turfur once.

After that you will either make sure you never ever put yourself into a position that may require hand winching, or you'll buy that power winch that you wanted anyway.

Also, saying a power winch only drags you into more trouble is a furphy. My experiences are that it gets you through the troublesome spot and quickly. If something requires you to be pulled out backwards then its typically pretty obvious and you're probably playing and will have someone with a strap.

I don't have a problem using a Tirfor but it helps if you're fit. ;)

A quick tug backwards by another car is always the easiest way but as I do a lot of my driving solo, it's not always a viable option. Frankly, I use winches so infrequently that if they hadn't have come with the cars, I wouldn't bother.

As always, gather all of the info and make the choice on your personal situation.

There was a really excellent review of winches about 9 months to a year ago or so in 4WD Action. The best winch from memory was a Premier winch. The various winch performances didn't match their costs necessarily.

I would also recommend you look at how the various parts of the winch are sealed. Cheaper winches (like the Warn Magnum winch) don't have a seal on the freewheel/engage knob so every time you go through water, if the winch is hotter than the water, it just sucks in water. Manual says have to pull the winch apart every time you go through water which I find ridiculous. Annually maybe. I partially solved the problem by getting a waterproof bag just bigger than the gear box end and clamping it over that end with screw clamps. Can operate the knob through the bag.
